I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them develop a genuine understanding of the subject. A tutor should create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It is also important to identify each student's strengths…

Role of tutor is not to make a student learn single subject, but understand students' learning rhythm and motivations. If you can't challenge student in learning path, it will benefit him in short run, but in long run he will fail miserably. Learning is the experience of fun and enjoyment. Hardworking and Preparation. Whenever I deliver speech or…

To be present with the student throughout the lesson, to allow space for open and honest communication, to treat students with respect, and to accomodate each student's unique learning style and talents. I look at maths as a fun mind-workout and my communication and teaching style encourages my students to also develop this attitude. I am very…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to be patient enough to go over and over the topics until the student fully grasps all the concepts and not rushing through the topics. My strength would be to simplify and present matter in an interactive and easily understandable manner and make sure the students understand the finer concepts of…

Most importantly, I think a tutor can demonstrate and guide a student on how to best deal with the frustration and adversity that comes their way. Frustration is a common effect of learning anything and if you're not equipped to overcome it, you may struggle a lot more than you need to and you may also be more likely to give up prematurely. I…

For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. Someone that he/she can look up to and be proud of. I have the ability to be extremely patient with my students which helps me gain their trust. Moreover, I can also induce self…

As a tutor, the most valuable thing I can do is provide opportunities for the student to learn, and allow them to become self-sufficient. My time with any student is limited, but their time to study themselves is not. I believe that building the confidence, strategy, and ethos to apply critical thinking and seek holistic understanding is the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is basically inspiring them to grow a sense of a passion for Mathematics. I believe the right role model can help the student put more effort into the subject, working hard to get where they aspire to be and simply just being a friend as well as a tutor for the student. I would say…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. A good tutor will work themselves out of a job. This is because a good tutor will not only teach the student the content but also how to learn. Therefore the student will be able to become independent of the tutor and then be able to teach other students. I am able to explain concepts clearly and concisely in a number of different ways. Thereby…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
