As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

A tutor should educate a student in the required content and keeping the student engaged, whilst still ensuring that the session is enjoyable, and fulfilling. To achieve this, a tutor should obviously be diligent in teaching, which includes preparing content and lessons beforehand, as well as consistently asking the student for feedback to guide…

For me, I believe that not only is it important for a tutor to impart academic knowledge upon the student in their lessons, but also to make sure to impart this knowledge in an engaging, creative way and check in, providing extra guidance and exercises as necessary so as much as possible they can truly understand and absorb the concepts. I also…

The most important role of a tutor is to transform a student’s mindset. Beyond teaching content, I aim to impart a genuine passion for the subject and build the self-belief that they are capable of mastering it. When a student stops saying 'I can't do this' and starts asking 'How do I solve this?', that is real success. As an Engineering Masters…

Everything begins with building a relationship with the child/student and getting to know them as a person, what interests them inside and outside of school. I believe in my students and their ability to succeed academically and overall and I make this message clear. I tell them, on a regular basis, I believe in you! You can do this! I won't…

I think that these 3 things are a must : Work on Student’s strengths. Look for students interests , so we can connect them to the contents being thought. Constant feedback I have good rapport with students , and I firmly believe that all starts with connection, so students can feel at ease. Adaptability is key because with individual…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. And many students tends to lose focus, or go mind blank during exams due to a lack of confidence. In addition, it is extremely important for a tutor…

The key benefit of a tutor is that they can provide individualised support for a student. Tutors have the unique position of being able to become very familiar with their students' understanding of subjects, and employ the most effective strategies to improve their learning. While teachers at students' schools often may not be able to allocate…

I can build my students engagement with and appreciation of the subject (many students find school boring or purposeless and I make a point to spark more joy in learning by integrating key notes of relevance into every lesson). I will also assure students that it is okay not to understand something, or to feel unconfident. Struggling with…

There are many important things that a tutor can do for a student, one of which is regardless of our personal feelings, it is important that we should work with each of our student to ensure their success. Act like you are happy to be there and see them. The tutor should always be transparent and ready to work. Also, a tutor should always keep up…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard…

Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
