I think encouraging the student to think and ask questions, while trying my best to help solve the issues is important. I also find preparing lessons and checking homework essential. I graduated from Abbotsleigh with Atar 99.6 in 2022, so have a fresh and clear understanding of the syllabus and…

I believe ultimately, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where when asked "Do you understand?", the student feels free to say "Nope". This honesty is priceless and very helpful in identifying knowledge-gaps early. I pride myself on being patient. I was a slow learner, and often had questions which were ignored or…

Building a relationship with students, this will help students to relax while learning. Being able to understand their needs is essential to me because as a student myself, I deeply understand the stress and difficulties for different aspects. I am good at communicating and able to explain in a understandable way without using language that it is…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to learn with the students. In my experience, students are much more likely to engage with the lessons and motivated to excel if they feel that they are learning together with the tutor. My key strengths as a tutor are: 1. I excel at explaining complex concepts in an easy-to-understand…

Make them a good person. Academics is important, but they also need to realize the purpose of education other than capitalistic schemes. Another thing is how a student can start to excel their academia without even realizing it. Good communication skills. Friendly environment. I like to be friends with my students rather than being a teacher. This…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is listen. It is very important to be tuned in to how your student is doing and how they feel about their work. If the work is way too hard or way too easy, not as much progress will be seen. To help the students as best as possible, you must understand their current level, what they want or need to…

Adapt to their needs. As a tutor, your job is to assist in their learning experience, and get growth from the student. There is no one way to teach that is effective for everyone. I believe that my biggest strength is understanding the learning styles of my students. Some are more visual learners, some are more verbal, and some just require…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I believe that a tutor must be able to provide the students with what they need. This means assessing the student's abilities and determining key weaknesses. Since not all students are the same, a successful tutor must be able to decide strategies that are suited for each individual student. I am adaptable and resourceful, so I can adjust myself…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to believe in them, encourage them, and remind them that failure is a natural part of the learning process. A tutor should help students build confidence, especially when they feel discouraged or downcast, and support them in staying motivated. Creating a positive and reassuring…

A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Furthermore, I believe that the most important thing a tutor should have…

As a tutor, I think it is very important to make sure that a student does not lose hope. Even in moments of distress, it is my responsibility that the student does not lose confidence in his abilities. Losing confidence or hope is the worst thing that can happen before an exam. The most important thing is to be a tutor if she can develop these abilities in his student. 1. why they are studying a particular subject? 2. How they can understand the laws of nature by doing science. 3. How they can develop the ability to ask questions? 4. How they can find the right answers to their questions. 5. Science is not a burden…

A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
