The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. From my previous experience, one of the most important things I have learned about students is that some of them are just afraid of asking questions because they think that their questions are stupid or their questions do not matter. If the tutor cannot be patient with the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence in their ability to learn. When students believe they can understand a subject, they become more willing to ask questions, try difficult problems, and persist when something is challenging. A tutor should create a supportive environment, explain concepts clearly,…

I think a tutor's primary role is to simplify complex concepts, adapt to individual needs, and foster confidence. Encouraging critical thinking, setting goals, and providing a positive atmosphere are crucial for independent learning. I believe my strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to break down difficult ideas into manageable steps, making it…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It can be frustrating not being able to figure something out, but it becomes a lot less daunting without extreme expectations. I think my strengths as a tutor lie in my patience and my creativity. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

Making a correct subject framework for the student, helps the student to capitalize his/her learning effectively. Hence it is important for a tutor to structure the studies , ask for feedback and check if the student has understood to a level required and throw small easy tests to get the student good motivation. I consider being able know the student's strength and weakness and explain them the topic accordingly to be the most important thing. People have different strengths, weakness and thinking capabilities. Tutors should be able to understand that and make sure that the way they are teaching should not be neither too overwhelming nor too boring/easy…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is listen. It is very important to be tuned in to how your student is doing and how they feel about their work. If the work is way too hard or way too easy, not as much progress will be seen. To help the students as best as possible, you must understand their current level, what they want or need to…

Simplify concepts in an understandable personalized way for them to understand at their own rythm. It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

Inside Macquarie ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zara focused on place value and rounding to tens and hundreds, then practiced addition strategies for multi-digit numbers.

In Year 8, Daniel worked through surface area of cylinders, applying the formula in worded scenarios and reviewing volume calculations for a range of 3D shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily tackled trigonometric ratios with bearings and solved angles of elevation and depression questions using diagrams to visualise real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in algebra needed reminders to show working, especially when forming equations—needs to start independently form equation of question for which a revision test is scheduled for next class.

In Year 11, time management emerged as an obstacle during exam strategies; planning responses more efficiently was discussed after rushed answers cost marks.

For a Year 6 geometry assessment, "test score 18.5/40" reflected gaps in both content and exam confidence.

One Year 7 learner hesitated to attempt questions due to fear of mistakes, leading to less written practice and slower improvement each session.

Recent Achievements

A Macquarie Park tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now actively seeks help when stuck on trigonometry problems—this shift has led her to solve more complex questions independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who struggled with quadratic equations last term managed to work through several examples without errors and even identified areas he wanted extra practice in.

For a younger learner in Year 3, reading aloud became smoother; she now tackles unfamiliar words by sounding them out instead of skipping over them, finishing her first storybook without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumont Road Public School.
