A tutor should understand the students needs and find a way to deliver information based on the students personality. Every student is different and every case should be treated differently. My strength as a tutor are but not limited to: - Effective communication methods; - Delivering information in a smooth understandable technique; and -…

I believe that the tutor's ability to provide multiple scenarios and perspectives when approaching difficult concepts to allow for a diverse understanding and strong base knowledge is extremely important for a student. A tutor should also be able to understand if a student is struggling and be able to help and guide them with patience so the…

If you can make your students shine and bring their own strengths to the forefront, you've won. You have to believe in them before they believe in themselves and if you're in tune with your student and can bring out all their hidden gems, there's nothing that could compare. I think I'm pretty engaging and just enjoy expressing myself. If I'm…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to empower them to become independent learners. I strive to foster a safe and encouraging environment where curiosity flourishes, even when the going gets tough. This way, students feel comfortable exploring ideas, asking questions, and turning challenges into opportunities for growth. I excel at…

I think it would be the unlimited support and confidence the tutor has for their student as well as their passion for their subject they are teaching. If the student feels like their tutor listens to them and has confidence in their potential, then in due time, the student will likely flourish and develop their abilities. A lot of the time…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Respect for the situations of my students, flexibility in responding to the sometimes substantial differences among them, humour as a means of…

The most important thing a tutor can do, is to assist students help themselves or to assist them so that they can become an independent learner, and thus, no longer need a tutor. A tutor must also remain enthused and passionate, so that they are able to keep their students motivated and eager to learn. Tutors should always have a positive…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student beyond simply teaching academic content is ‘build confidence’. Many students struggle with confidence, especially when facing challenging subjects or tasks. A tutor's encouragement, positive feedback, and belief in their potential can help students overcome self-doubt and develop a growth…

In my opinion, making the student feel comfortable is key to establishing a healthy and optimistic relationship with learning. The teaching space needs to be free of judgement and should feel inclusive. A one-size-fits-all method of teaching disregards every student's unique circumstances so the tutor should make an active effort to empathise with…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. Like planting a tree, it may take sometime for teaching to be rewarding but it has a great impact as a tutor get a chance to contribute to a positive change in students' life. I see myself as a communicative, friendly,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. When a student can see that someone truly believes in them, they can start to believe in themselves too. It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

The most important thing would be to push them to be passionate and to be interested in what they are doing, and to help them want to improve at what they're learning. I believe that encouragement and support is crucial to tutoring. A tutor must be able to reassure students when they feel stuck, or discouraged about a certain subject. I'm very personable. Inside MaribyrnongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophia focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers using visual models.

Year 8 student Jack worked through linear equations with two variables and practiced times tables for fluency.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mia tackled trigonometric ratios in right-angled triangles and applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve worded geometry problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was assigned Algebraic Fractions homework but left it incomplete, which slowed progress during the next session—he needs to finish the assigned homeworks on Algebraic Fractions.

In Year 11 Biology, one learner tended to rely on memorising definitions instead of connecting concepts using textbook readings and key terms; this led to difficulty answering deeper questions.

For a Year 5 student, written working was often skipped in multiplication problems: "thinks a lot in her head. Does not write working out," making it harder for her to catch errors or remember steps later.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maribyrnong noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now confidently voices questions when stuck—this change meant he could work through challenging algebraic fractions without guessing.

Another high schooler recently completed a matrix assignment entirely on his own and presented each step clearly for the first time, following earlier struggles with laying out his solutions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from needing hands-on support for two-digit addition to accurately solving three-digit problems independently and even explaining her steps out loud during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Primary School.
