The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to inspire confidence and a love for learning. When a teacher believes in their students and helps them recognize their own potential, it transforms how they approach education and challenges. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. Again, providing help academically is important, however, everyone who is smart can do that easily. However, that's not everything being a tutor is about. A tutor needs to have the supportive manner, encouraging the student verbally would be one of many ways to help. And as for helping with their difficulties when it comes to homework, tutors…

I think for a tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to keep…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make themselves welcoming. A good and effective tutor is open to all ideas and willing to completely work with the student. I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

Karen, Maroubra

Inside MaroubraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Claudia focused on division and 3D shapes, connecting these to fractions while completing her Excel homework.

For Year 7 Ava, lessons explored coordinate geometry by graphing with tables of values and investigating transformations of shapes on a number plane.

A Year 8 student worked through the introduction to trigonometry using SOHCAHTOA as well as solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 6, one student often avoided showing working in algebra and fractions, especially when unsure—"she would pause, then erase attempts rather than risk a mistake." This hesitation meant feedback opportunities were missed and progress slowed during lessons.

A Year 10 student tackling trigonometry tended to rely heavily on calculator shortcuts for even basic steps, which led to gaps in understanding key trig definitions.

In Year 8 algebra, another lost focus midway through multi-step problems; as noted, "he'd get distracted and forget earlier steps," leading to repeated errors that undermined his confidence in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maroubra noticed Ava, a Year 7 student, recently started checking her own working for mistakes and now asks for tougher questions when she finishes early—this is a big shift from when she'd quietly move on without double-checking.

In Year 6, Claudia used to hesitate with division by large numbers but can now independently solve problems involving six-digit dividends and confidently explains each step aloud.

Meanwhile, Gia (Year 4) has begun completing her homework before sessions without reminders and last week attempted all the "challenge" questions for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Aidan's Catholic Primary School.
