Tutors have the important role of helping build a student's confidence and guide them to becoming more efficient learners. A tutor should also create a safe, non-judgemental learning space for students to grow academically. From experience helping peers and my younger brother with school, I found that a strength I have is simplifying concepts to…

The most important thing is to give the students better clarity than when they first joined the session. I have a very logical approach to teaching my specialty subjects, taking methodical and incremental learning steps to ensure the session is successful. In addition, by focusing on student comprehension, I make sure that the student does not…

Undoubtedly, the primary focus of a tutor is to be patient with their students. All respective students are different from one another. Which also means they learn differently. As a tutor, it is my job to understand each unique needs, challenges and learning style. With patience, any tutor can fully support the growth of a student, whether it be…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. Moreover, it is important for the tutor to align to the goals of the student and help them achieve that. I can explain difficult problems in an easy to understand manner. I explain…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. Whether that may be to help them catch up in certain subjects, to reach for top marks for their desired high school or university or in need of motivation to study in creating habits. I believe that the most important thing will be for the tutor…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

A common issue in tutoring is when a tutor understands the learning material but is unable to communicate it clearly to the student. Another very important thing is being prepared to answer…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the best use of this opportunity and let the student discover the best version of themselves. I think the bonding between the tutor and the student is very important. If the student doesn't feel comfortable talking to the tutor, he or she will never learn effectively. First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. However, along the way there, I think it's important for a tutor to help them find their own reason on why they want to do well, their own unique strengths and learning styles, guide them on how to access credible resources help them develop their own voice…

I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. But I believe that tutoring goes so much further beyond that. A tutor should strive to truly engage the student in their learning. A good tutor will motivate and inspire the student so that they are…

I believe it is important to address the student's main academic concerns by understanding their goals and deriving a plan to achieve those goals. Following which, it will be essential to chart the student's progress and be flexible in changing the lesson programs to enable targetted improvement. A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

Our girls love the tutor. There confidence in math is stronger
Esther, Marrickville

Inside MarrickvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and completed a maths assessment to check understanding across key topics.

In Year 7, James practised index laws and simplifying expressions with like terms, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia focused on calculating area and volume of 3D shapes as well as tackling multi-step worded questions involving both two- and three-dimensional figures.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student tended to rush through multiplication problems, leading to repeated small errors—"he made little mistakes with multiplication while trying to get through the maths work as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with times tables and would often guess rather than calculate answers for division or fraction tasks.

In Year 7 English, a reluctance to argue from another perspective meant written responses were shorter and less developed.

During homework in Year 4, spelling activities left a student frustrated and distracted when difficult words slowed progress; unfinished sections remained at lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

A Marrickville tutor recently noticed that Sophie, a high school student, now independently works through mixed word problems in maths tests—last term she needed reminders for every step, but this week she finished 1.5 tests in the time needed for one and went back to check her answers without prompting.

Another win: Olivia, also in high school, has started fixing mistakes in her fraction calculations before writing them down, where previously she'd skip checking altogether.

In Year 4 English, Leon moved from short sentences to adding more detail on his own; last session he wrote four connected sentences with clear arguments about wisdom versus money.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library & History: Marrickville Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
