I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning approachable, and guide them to become independent learners. It’s not just about explaining the subject—it’s about helping them believe they can do it. A good tutor listens, encourages questions, and creates a space where the…

I believe all educators need to be able to connect with students. My experience is that being able to build bonds of trust and goodwill goes a long way in opening students up to what you're teaching, as well as facilitating a comfortable environment where students not only learn, but enjoy doing so. I believe my past experience in education is my…

Making a correct subject framework for the student, helps the student to capitalize his/her learning effectively. Hence it is important for a tutor to structure the studies , ask for feedback and check if the student has understood to a level required and throw small easy tests to get the student good motivation. I have always excelled and been a…

Making students regain the confidence they loose on themselves when they see they're not getting the results they expected. I believe a tutor should not only teach students exam oriented problem solving skills but also help them build positive learning mindsets. Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in their own ability to learn. Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. Tutors can help with homework, projects or just help the student gain a more thorough understanding of the subject. Every Tutor’s main goal is to help the student with questions, clarify content and provide challenging questions back to the student to test the gained knowledge. The better tutors don’t just do this, they set goals for the…

Inside MarsfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lea focused on algebraic techniques, working through expansion and factorisation questions, as well as discussing accuracy and limits of accuracy using examples from homework.

In Year 10, Jack tackled trigonometric identities and proof-based questions to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

For Year 11, Sienna concentrated on solving combinations and permutations problems by breaking down multi-step scenarios, ensuring she could apply these skills to new contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student "didn't do homework," which meant new methods in inequalities were not reinforced outside of lessons—gaps showed up when tackling unfamiliar problems.

In Year 10 trigonometry, a reluctance to ask questions led to guessing answers instead of clarifying confusion; as noted, "she needs to be more active in asking questions."

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly avoided writing calculation steps in vector proofs, leading to sign errors and lost marks.

Another struggled with exam integration tasks due to careless corrections, erasing rather than confronting mistakes—a habit that cost marks under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Marsfield tutor noted that a Year 11 student recently moved from completing almost all homework correctly, showing she now checks her understanding and attempts problems even when unsure.

In a senior session, another high school student improved her correction rate on HSC-style papers—she now revisits mistakes independently and answers more quickly than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who previously hesitated to share ideas is now volunteering her thinking aloud during lessons, making visible steps toward greater classroom participation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
