Thereby boosting a student's confidence in the subject, which enables them to further share this knowledge with fellow classmates when they have a difficulty. To take the time to prepare a lesson suited for the student and take the time to get to know the student and identify his/her strengths in order to capitalize them, and identify his/her weaknesses so that we can work on them. Since I have been a teacher in these subjects, I know which topics most students struggle understanding; and because I am…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

I think one extremely important thing a tutor can do is to adapt their teaching to the individual needs and abilities of each student, and adapt themselves to the student, not force the student to adapt to them. This involves listening to the student and observing how they work and then responding to those things. Another extremely important thing…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill a sense of confidence in the student about their own ability. The tutor can demonstrate to the student that they can achieve their different goals and help them achieve these. The tutor can also create a plan to show the student how to goal will be achieved. This will create a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create clarity, and inspire motivation. A good tutor doesn’t just explain answers — they guide students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills. By being patient, encouraging, and consistent, tutors help students feel supported and capable. I also…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

The most important thing I can do for a student is providing the tools and resources to be able to tackle problems independently, no matter the difficulty. It depends a little bit on age but the older they get the more important confidence is going to be and giving the students confidence is the most important job. Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

Inside MenoraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Annie focused on converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, then practiced addition and subtraction with mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Liam worked through graphing quadratic polynomials in f(x) form and was introduced to exponential graphs by sketching several types for practice.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily revised bivariate data analysis and measurement skills, including calculating the perimeter of different shapes and reviewing indices and surds.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 maths, hesitation to trust initial answers led to over-erasing and second-guessing; "Stop erasing working!" was a tutor's note after a polynomial exercise. This perfectionism slowed progress and hid the reasoning behind mostly correct solutions.

In Year 8 algebra, not reading each question carefully resulted in solving for area when perimeter was required—losing marks despite knowing the process.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's recount writing often lacked sentence breaks and clear formatting, making ideas hard to follow for both writer and reader. Misplaced confidence or messy structure meant extra time spent clarifying rather than advancing.

Recent Achievements

One Menora tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with indices and surds is now asking questions on her own and isn't getting tripped up by tricky conversions between shapes or units.

In a recent high school session, another student who'd struggled with quadratic equations was able to work through several problems independently, only checking in for occasional guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—previously unsure about reading time—now confidently converts between am/pm and 24-hour clock formats without help, even explaining the process aloud as she works.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inglewood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coolbinia Primary School.
