As a tutor, the most important thing we can do is to give a student the confidence they need to succeed. Every student has the inherent ability to be successful but they may not have the right resources or knowledge to bring out that confidence within themselves. As a tutor, we are giving them resources and knowledges that helps them achieve the…

Inspire them. Tutors are specialised in their field and their subjects and they can offer motivation and inspiration to students. Especially students who might not understand the importance of learning particular subjects or who have given up on their studies. I can explain concepts in many different ways, tailored to each child’s method of…

Make a comfortable vibe for the students when you teach them. If the students feel comfortable to study with you and help them get interested in the subject, it will be easier for you to assist students in achieving their learning goals. And I believe that helping them make small improvements day by day is the most important thing a tutor can do…

A tutor can drastically improve a student's confidence in a subject and in their own ability. I think this is really important as this confidence boost will enable them to approach many aspects of their life with less fear, leading to greater opportunities. Throughout my school career I've learned lots about how to study and learn, and I am really…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them the ability to problem solve independently, so that s a tutor would not be needed in the future. Giving a student the ability to learn how to study is the perfect opportunity for that student to reach its full potential. Another key factor a tutor can bestow on a student is the…

First of all, communication is definitely vital in order to engage with tutees. Before any information exchange can take place, both parties should be able to relay their thoughts and express their opinions as clear as possible to avoid misconceptions. This skill is essential in the case of tutoring, as most of the knowledge exchange are only…

Some of the strengths that I believe are quite necessary for a tutor other than leadership are resilience, and the ability to properly analyse a students learning…

I think a tutor has a lot of power in empowering a student and making them love learning and love the subject. If a tutor can reorient a student's perspective of a certain topic and make the student learn it, it enables the student to engage more with the subject and hopefully increases their passion for learning and education in general which I…

I believe that as much as it is important to help the child improve and gain confidence, it is also important to build and maintain a tutor-student relationship. Inside MerrimacTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Sophie practiced **addition and subtraction with worded problems**, worked on recognising key phrases in maths questions, and used real-life scenarios to understand money calculations.

In Year 10, Milly focused on **financial maths topics such as calculating interest and monthly losses** through practice exam questions, as well as applying budgeting skills and interpreting transport timetables.

For Year 11 Mathematics Methods, Jonah tackled **trigonometry fundamentals including the unit circle and exact values**, plus finding equations for tangents to sine or cosine graphs.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly left their textbook or charged laptop at home, which meant they couldn't access essential examples during lessons—this delayed progress on advanced integration techniques.

For a Year 12 student, notes show that time management was an issue: "Needs to focus more on getting ideas to paper as soon as possible to save the last minute rush."

In Year 7 maths, messy working and missing decimal points in financial problems made it hard to track errors; one session ended with confusion over change because steps weren't shown clearly.

When exam practice began, incomplete homework left gaps in problem-solving routines.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Merrimac recently noticed a big shift for Cameron, a high school student who used to hesitate with worded maths problems—now he's reading questions carefully, working out what's needed before diving in, and even tackling five practice problems a day on his own.

Mikayla (Year 11) finally grasped how to find the equation of a tangent line to sine and cosine waves by breaking each step down, which was tricky for her before.

In Year 3, Sophie has gone from needing lots of hints to solving addition and subtraction questions independently, even talking through her solutions aloud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mudgeeraba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's College.
