I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student would be to find a way to engage them and encourage them to succeed in their studies. To help them actually see that they're getting better, and keep them motivated to continue working the best they can. I am a patient person with a relaxed demeanour. I can understand that…

Giving a student the tools necessary to progress in the subject by himself whilst also being kind and patient. Giving just questions and answers can be done by his teacher for free, so tutors should give that extra mile. The various ways i can put a question. The one big thing about a hard question is some people might not understand it, so having…

I believe the most important thing for a chemistry tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to create a positive atmosphere for learning. As a result it builds confidence within the student. Also a tutor should help students develop problem solving skills and independent thinking. I'm patient and understanding because of that it eases many students' nerves. That allows…

The ability to explain concepts and solutions to problems in a way that the student can understand. What can look very simple to us can seem like a foreign language to our students, so the skill to break these down and make the student believe that what just looked impossible to them is actually very doable is invaluable as a chemistry tutor.…

A tutor is beyond someone that can just teach some topics to students, but they are someone that the student looks upto, and feels comfortable sharing their weaknesses to. It is essential for for the tutor to understand the child’s needs, and cater to those specifically. My strengths are that i have recently graduated high school, so I am very…

I believe that a chemistry tutor should create an environment where the student-tutor relationship, isn't just answering questions on a piece of paper, rather building confidence, developing critical thinking skills and implementing it, not just at school but in real life scenarios as well. With my experience of tutoring, I've learnt that there is…

Tutors can be a great source of inspiration to a student to do more and learn more. So, if at least one student is benefited with my knowledge and inspired to do more than just the ordinary that could be the…

In my view, the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for their student is to instill confidence. Inside Middle SwanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Charlotte focused on Human Biology, working through osmosis and cell transport concepts and reviewing strategies for effective ATAR study and note-taking.

In Year 12, Emily covered the stages of meiosis, including non-disjunction and crossing over, as well as exploring organic versus inorganic molecules and their relevance to cell membranes using targeted worksheets and diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan practiced rearranging equations in Physics (such as d = vt and Ek = ½mv²) and applied these to real-world problems involving kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student did not bring or prepare notes for a test, relying heavily on tutor-supplied materials and struggling to answer questions without them—"he has lost a lot of the notes that I gave him to review for his test."

In Year 12 calculus, skipping steps when applying the chain rule led to persistent sign errors; as noted, "he forgot to multiply by the derivative of the nested function."

Meanwhile, in Year 7 English, one student's writing lacked clarity and structure due to not breaking down assignment instructions before starting.

Early primary lessons showed that avoiding written working in maths—often from fear of mistakes—made it harder to track errors and slowed progress during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Middle Swan tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently raises questions when confused, ensuring all issues are addressed before moving on—something he rarely did at the start of tutoring.

In another recent session, a high schooler preparing for an upcoming test began making her own cue cards after struggling to remember key concepts last term; she's now using them unprompted.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to guess during long division started slowing down and checking her work, leading her to complete several problems accurately by herself without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Midland Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Primary School.
