From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to learn. That means creating an environment where it’s okay to not know something, to ask questions, and even to make mistakes. When students aren’t worried about being judged, they’re way more likely to engage and actually enjoy the learning process. Beyond…

To be an effective tutor, creating a positive learning environment and building connection with the student is crucial. Tutors should be adaptable and tailor their approach to the student's learning style. Constructive feedback is necessary to help students stay motivated and progress toward their goals. Lastly, a tutor should practice patience,…

First and foremost, make sure the student properly understands all the content. From there, a tutor should provide refinement, using their experience to show their students how to tackle exams and tests. I ardently want to see my students succeed, and will put in the effort to achieve this. Completing the most recent version of the study design…

It is vital, especially in year 12, for a tutor to unlock a student's full potential in a certain subject, in order to ensure that they perform confidently in their exams, fully knowing that they are doing the best that they can, and have utilized all the available resources. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence they need to sit an exam and believe that they have the skills required to answer the questions in front of them. I have had a number of students come to me with issues relating to this, along the lines of 'I just had no idea what to do.' I aim to equip my students…

A tutor should be patient, allowing students to build confidence in answering things alone and creating a basis for independent learning. I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

Give them tools to increase their confidence! A tutor is there as a support system; they're there to provide the one-on-one attention a classroom teacher is unable to provide, and to clarify, reinforce, and adapt classroom teaching so that students get the most out of their learning. That's what helps them to meet their goals and find success. My…

Deepti is working with my daughter for more than a year as her Tutor. The great strength of Deepti is the trust relationship that she develop with the students, so they feel comfortable to open up and get the guidelines she share and teach. My daughter was definitely improved her math, but more important improved her confident and approach to math.

Inside MoorabbinTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ruby focused on multiplying by 2s and 3s as well as tackling multi-step addition problems, including an introduction to doubling larger numbers.

For Year 9, Liam worked through linear equations and revisited square roots and cube roots, practising with expansion using the F.O.I.L. method.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James tackled exponential and logarithm questions along with investigating data distributions in general mathematics, often reviewing homework questions together for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Science, a student's note-taking remained inconsistent—key points were often missed, making revision harder later. "He should from now on write down key areas of each lesson in a science book," one tutor observed.

In Year 11 Maths, test stress led to unfinished questions and errors under time pressure; the student struggled to highlight keywords or pace himself during assessments.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 English student avoided revisiting past feedback, so similar issues recurred in writing tasks.

Across several grades, homework was incomplete or attempted only briefly between sessions, limiting deeper practice and retention when new topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moorabbin recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who used to skip steps and feel stuck on algebra, now writes out each stage when expanding or factorising—he even tackled some problems in his head after practising FOIL.

Another high schooler showed a real shift by teaching back the substitution method for solving equations, something he'd previously struggled to remember without prompting.

Among younger students, one Year 4 girl went from guessing at multiplication to getting all her homework questions right with hardly any help and has started looking ahead at adding fractions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moorabbin Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.
