Being a good listener and adjusting to what I think is best for them for me is very important. Some students may be fully motivated to do the best they can and I can therefore assign them with homework, whilst also ensuring they don't feel either overwhelmed or not receiving enough, which therefore requires communication. The next important thing…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to provide the student with deep understanding of concepts so that the student can approach future challenges with the confidence that they can work through it on their own, even if it is unfamiliar. There is so much more to mathematics than just memorisation as so many people believe, they key is problem…

One main thing I realised was important for a tutor is to not expect the student to learn/understand things in the exact same way you do. Being open to hearing how a student learns best and being able to vary the teaching style is vital. I think I am quite adaptable and can explain singular concepts in many different ways depending on which the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach the student about any and all areas that the student have doubts or concerns with as well as reinforcing confidence for the student particularly in the weeks the follow before an exam. I am articulate in my language, know content well and am able to explain complex and bizarre concepts…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is listen to/watch for what they're struggling with most, and focus on that. Optimising the time you have with them will make sure that they can improve more quickly. I believe that my strengths as a tutor include my enthusiasm and passion for mathematics, and I try to pass…

Personally, I believe that in order to be a good tutor it is necessary to provide a level of support that feels as if it extends beyond the obligation that the position you hold is your job. I believe it is crucial to possess a genuine understanding for the strengths and flaws of your students in order to properly and efficiently deliver supoort…

I think a tutor, or any teacher, can honestly make or break a subject. As a tutor, I want to be able to make a student fall in love with what they are teaching them, rather than them seeing going to tutoring as a chore. I find my biggest strength to be that I get along well with younger kids and other people in general. I am very patient, and dont…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give them a personalised teaching experience. Often there are other factors at play in the progress of a student's learning than just their mental ability. Being able to recognise and connect to the child will open up numerous learning pathways to allow them to reach their full…

A tutor needs to provide their student with support, tools, skills and most importantly understanding of how they can effectively approach their studies and achieve the best possible results they can. A tutor should also make their student feel comfortable, creating a sense of trust between them and allowing for more effective tutoring sessions.…

A tutor can provide deeper and specific pedagogical learning support for students to hope them reach their learning goals. A student might not get enough one-on-one time with a classroom teacher in a regular classroom setting. Tutors can complement the traditional school setting by providing assistance, clarification, deeper scaffolding and…

I think the most important thing is persistence. If the tutor isn’t motivated to help the student, the student won’t be motivated either. I also think it’s necessary for a tutor to try to explain things in different ways with patience ensuring the student understands. I am very passionate about maths, I am also very persistent and have good…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

Listen. I think it is pivotal for a tutor to be able to listen to the student. Be it regarding concepts or content, or just a tutors teaching style. Listening and responding to feedback is essential. Determination. When teaching a student something for the first time, it can be very difficult for them to understand a concept. So, as a tutor, I am…

1. Help them towards their study milestones so they have an unhindered path towards any given career of choice. 3. Understand something rather than memorising it. I hold this statement in significance. Having studied in different countries I understand the difference in teaching. Tutoring being 1 on 1 or in small groups allows for this. I…

In my view, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to serve as a catalyst for independent learning. My primary goal is not simply to help them complete the current assignment, but to equip them with the tools, study habits, and critical thinking strategies necessary to succeed on their own long after our sessions end. This…

Foster self-confidence in their subject areas, as the main hurdle many students face, is self-doubt in their ability, which causes them to give up on their courses. I know the content very well and have helped many of my peers overcome things they don't understand in the syllabus. So I am familiar with many of the common problems students face in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence that they have the ability to learn. I am very patient, kind and empathetic and I…

Above tutoring a student, I believe a tutor should be a role model; They should inspire a love for learning. Furthermore, the tutor should build a relationship to build trust so that the lessons don't seem forced and uncomfortable. Inside Morning BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lily focused on **ratios and bearings**, using worded problems to strengthen understanding of how these concepts connect in geometry.

For Year 11, Josh tackled **financial mathematics** by calculating simple and compound interest as well as depreciation through real-life scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Mia worked on HSC trial revision with a mix of past exam papers and targeted questions involving **normal distribution** and advanced financial maths.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for HSC mathematics often practiced with notes open, but found that "practice under exam conditions, ie no notes," exposed gaps in recall and confidence—timed settings brought extra pressure, and small details were missed.

In Year 8 algebra sessions, skipping over question instructions too quickly meant subtle differences went unnoticed; as a tutor noted, "taking time to understand the question before working" was needed when sign errors appeared.

During senior revision, easy mistakes recurred when students didn't check their work after finishing a timed set—resulting in points lost on questions they actually understood.

Recent Achievements

One Morning Bay tutor noted a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling with algebra earlier in the term, now works through complex equations with far fewer errors and even uses improved skills to tackle harder problems independently.

In another session, a high schooler came prepared with specific questions for the first time instead of waiting passively—showing new initiative and focus during their maths lesson.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student remembered last week's strategies unprompted and applied them to this week's word problems without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Avalon Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bilgola Plateau Public School.
