the most important thing for a tutor is to be able to listen to their students to truly understand their wants and needs, in order to help them achieve their goals the best way they can. I am able to adapt to different learning styles, teaching the students in the manner that appears best to them. I am good at listening to the students to fully…

Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to show them that they have great potential, as well as leave them with invaluable lessons that they will call upon throughout the rest of their education journey. - I am young and I am a very social person, which means that building a rapport with young students comes very…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for their students are to listen to them, understand their individual needs, and relentlessly support their learning journey. By actively listening, a tutor can identify where the student is struggling and how they best learn, which allows for a tailored approach that makes the material more…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be giving them motivation and support. As a tutor we can help build the students confidence in their academic abilities. We can also effectively equip students with valuable study skills that's applicable in all their future studies. Lastly, learning can be challenging, so as…

Confidence. A great tutor doesn't just teach the subject, they help the student believe they can master it. That shift in mindset is what drives real progress. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear way. Because I'm studying mechanical engineering, I had to learn how to break down difficult…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Often, students seek tutoring because they believe they cannot achieve their academic goals, and if that thought persists, it can hinder their ability to perform. Having someone who believes in them helps boost their morale significantly, making them more eager to…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is understand their student’s weakness and strengths and work on them and use them respectively. The major role is guidance. A good tutor should create a comfortable environment where the student should feel free to ask questions, identify gaps in their knowledge, and gradually making students capable of solving problems on their own. I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

To help students to not feel overwhelmed by the subject, since this can extinguish any desire to learn further. I find that the best way of doing this is to break questions or ideas into smaller parts so that the areas that they are struggling with can be identified, isolated, and worked through. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, explain concepts clearly, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. A good tutor should not simply give answers, but guide students to understand the method, recognise patterns and become more confident in approaching new questions. It is also…

It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

Inside Mosman ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages as well as tackling percentage word problems using real-life scenarios.

In Year 9, Sophie focused on understanding circle theorems—solving problems involving tangents and alternate segment theorem, and practicing correct mathematical notation.

For Year 10, Marcus consolidated skills in sketching parabolas by completing the square and identifying key features from turning point form, also using discriminant rules for axis of symmetry.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student faced challenges with time management in tests, often leaving complex calculus questions unfinished; as one tutor observed, "he needed to plan which problems to tackle first but ran out of time."

In Year 8, another student's working was described as "messy and hard to follow," especially during algebra tasks—key steps were skipped on paper, making it tough to track errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner forgot to complete homework on subtraction with borrowing, so most of the lesson was spent revisiting old ground rather than building new skills. This slowed overall progress and left them feeling frustrated by the end.

Recent Achievements

One Mosman Park tutor saw a Year 11 student move from hesitating over critical points in functions to independently finding x- and y-intercepts and confidently identifying maxima and minima without prompting.

A Year 9 student who used to skip over tricky worded ratio problems now tries each question solo before asking for help, neatly setting out her solutions and catching her own errors.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Jimmy has shifted from guessing during subtraction to actively voicing his doubts and using a checklist he created to avoid place value mistakes—he finished the session by solving all borrowing questions unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman Park Primary School.
