I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

The most important thing to do as a tutor is to ensure your students are comfortable with you teaching them. Being able to cater to each student and getting to know them to ensure that you can adapt your teaching methods to be suite them. I am a very patient person and always do my best to explain concepts in a way people can understand…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable, respected, and motivated…

The most important thing is to build confidence of the student in their learning, and making them believe that they can do it without giving them pressure or distinguishing one from another for their abilities. It is also important for the tutor to create a comfortable learning environment where they don’t feel embarrassed making mistakes but…

Guiding the student if they need help, but leaving most of the problem solving up to them so that student builds a deeper understanding of the content and creates the connections rather than just memorising information. Throughout my education, I liked those teachers who would inspire me to solve the problem by myself rather than giving the information directly. For me, the most important thing is the ability to solve a problem using the right methods. To tutor is to guide them to the right direction and help students avoid the common mistakes. I have excellent…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for their students are to listen to them, understand their individual needs, and relentlessly support their learning journey. By actively listening, a tutor can identify where the student is struggling and how they best learn, which allows for a tailored approach that makes the material more…

Helping each student be the best learner that they can be; independent learning is something that all successful students must be able to do. My philosophy is that if you want something, you can achieve it, as long as you dedicate the time and effort into it, and I will make sure that my students have this same mindset. I aim to make studying and…

Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student having the ability to take pressure off the students. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide a structured learning environment. Often, the biggest source of exam-related stress is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material and not seeing the connections between topics. A tutor should help students make sense of this by summarizing key concepts and looking ahead,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students gain clarity in the concepts they don't understand well from school. And practice is key. Inside MurdochTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Savannah explored the relationship between fractions, decimals, and operations like multiplication and division while reviewing a NAPLAN practice test.

Year 9 student Ryan worked on solving linear equations for x and y, graphing those equations, and understanding gradients and intercepts using visual aids.

For Year 10, Alice focused on algebraic factorisation techniques as well as revising rotation of triangles in preparation for an upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on glancing at multiplication tables during problem-solving, rather than practicing recall—this habit slowed progress in mastering mental maths and caused hesitation under time pressure.

In Year 10, another student did not use revision materials provided or arrive with specific questions after independent attempts; as one tutor noted, "she needs to come prepared so the session is more beneficial."

Meanwhile, a primary learner skipped double-checking answers in subtraction, resulting in frequent copying errors.

These patterns meant extra lesson time was spent clarifying misunderstandings instead of building new skills or confidence before assessments.

Recent Achievements

A Murdoch tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after initially forgetting how to approach similar triangles, managed to master the method by the end of their session and could solve problems independently.

In another case, a Year 8 student who had previously relied on multiplication charts is now working through times-tables without prompts and even completed a daunting set of questions quickly once encouraged.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school has begun expressing exactly where she feels unsure instead of staying quiet—she's now telling her tutor which concepts "make sense" as they work together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bull Creek Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College WA (Murdoch).
