Being patient with a student has to be the most important. Learning isn’t the same for everyone and some areas of learning are harder for some people. Remaining patient and staying kind while a child is learning is extremely important. I am a patient person, who can think creatively and how to teach subjects in different ways to suit different…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

Ensure that the student is gaining confidence and is improving. I believe its not the final result that counts, but its ensuring the student's mental health is taken care or whilst the student is experiencing a steady improvement. I believe I am a person with strong moral values that can grasp concepts relatively quickly. I also memorise content…

According to me, the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is be a good listener. It is very important to know and understand why a student is facing a problem in a particular situation so that it can be tackled. The tutor should also be compassionate and patient toward the student and should be able to adapt themselves as per…

A good tutor can change the student's mindset and make them better people. Having a good tutor makes the subject automatically interesting and students tend to invest more time and put more effort into it. I am a very patient and dedicated person. Also, I like to make sure that every person/student I teach, understands everything thoroughly. I try…

Above all else, I believe a biology tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of…

Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

Being patient and understanding. At the beginning of my tutoring journey, I provided several private one on one tutoring sessions. I started to expect a lot from the students as some students performed better than ours. But it is later I started understanding every student is different and we should always work at their pace. Never push them and…

Good grades would be the obvious answer. However, if I can spark an interest in the subject for the student the grades will logically follow. A strength would definitely be communication, I find that I can easily get my point across eloquently. I also take pride in my etiquette and friendliness. A weakness that I can see being an issue is lesson…

I think the most important thing a biology tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students…

Be empathetic and put yourself in the shoes of the student whole teaching them, to understand how they view the subject at hand and how you can help them understand it better. It's also important to be well prepared and to be willing to listen to the student's ideas and concerns and open to research anything needed in more depth to help the…

Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
