-Investigate a student's weakness and focus on overcoming that weakness. -A tutor should have an individual plan for each student depending on a student's specific need. -A tutor should aim to develop the skills of a student with time. Results in a scorecard should serve as a KPI. Persistence is one of my favorite traits when it comes to…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them better understand the material they are learning and to really engage with it. Tutors have the ability to be one on one with students and they can really transform a students perspective and views on a particular subject for the better. My strengths as a tutor…

The most important things a tutor can do are create a supportive learning environment, build the student’s confidence, and develop their problem-solving skills rather than just giving answers. A tutor should guide students to think critically, reinforce foundational concepts, and equip them with strategies they can use independently in the…

It is incredibly important to recognise their progress and to provide valuable feedback, giving them the motivation and direction to develop even further. Never teach the student wrong knowledge, and be accountable and reliable for the things one conveys to his students. I have excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and strong academic background in the units I've elected to tutor. Keen to share my strategies for succeeding in the units and adding value to other's life, I've been…

Not all students learn the same or at the speed so it's important to be patient in teaching at all times. All tutors should make their students feel safe and enjoy the lesson in order for the students to take their time and fully understand the topic without panicking or getting frustrated. I think my strengths as a tutor are finding and sticking…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is to guide and support their student, helping them gain skills in the subject, but also to help them gain confidence in their skills and the class. I am patient, and can change my language and way of conveying the content to help people who learn in different…

As I mentioned before I think it is extremely important for tutors to give their students personalized tools to succeed in the future. The nature of 1-on-1 help should lead to finding ways to personally help students excel that large classes can't always provide. I think I bring a lot of personality to the table and can get along with the children…

I consider the fact that a tutor should provide support for the student instead of expecting top grades all the time. If I can make a student learn and like the subject and process of learning, it is the best gain that I can get from it. I think I explain things in a detailed way and I try not to explicitly give the answer. Instead, I ask the…

As a requirement to be able to teach college physics, I had to take a course in teaching etiquette where we were required to submit a teaching statement for our final grade. The philosophy I leaned on in that statement is one I still believe to this day, and that is that the best thing a tutor can instill in a student is a seed of curiosity and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is helping them to understand and master the basic foundations in their subjects. These are important as from these key concepts, students will build on them further so they can tackle even harder questions with confidence. A great tutor will also showcase to a student the bigger picture, and…

Not every student learns in the same way despite the fact that every student is expected to learn the same way. Some students require additional support or alternative explanations for difficult concepts - which is where a tutor is required. The most important thing that a tutor can do is to unlock a student's full potential so they perform to the…

Building a student's confidence, helping them understand the material in a way that makes sense to them, and fostering a supportive environment where they feel free to ask questions are, in my opinion, the three most crucial things a tutor can do for a student. Build confidence and independence, not dependence. A good tutor doesn't just hand over answers they teach the student how to think through a problem, so that in the exam room, alone, the student can do it themselves. That means diagnosing the real gap (it's often two topics earlier than where the student thinks they're stuck), explaining it in…

A tutor is there as a guide, not to replace the teacher. A tutor should help a student not just with the topic at hand, but also allow for the student to grow and be able to solve problems and learn effectively on their own in the future. I have been told that the way I explain things are easy to understand. My students enjoy my company as I…

Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
