In my opinion the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to set the student up in a positive mindset towards learning. This includes encouraging the student to strive in their academic life as well as assist them in understanding methods they can use to seek support in learning different concepts. Being a high school student not…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Students already have bounds of pressure heaped on them, academic, parental, administrative, personal, etc. and sometimes all it takes is one Calculus question to bring them to their wit's end. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey and…

A tutor should take their time with a student and make sure the student understands before moving on. I believe the purpose of tutoring should be to provide learning strategies that are specific to the individual in contrast with teaching in a classroom (at the pace of the class). A tutor should provide multiple strategies for learning. For…

I believe the most crucial thing that a tutor can do for their student is to encourage not only their understanding of a subject/topic but also their passion and enthusiasm for it. I believe that allowing a student to flourish in an environment tailored to them allows them to treat their studies less as a chore and more as a passion. This not…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to be wrong. So many students disengage from learning because they're afraid of making mistakes or looking unintelligent. Once that fear is removed, real learning can happen. Beyond that, I think a tutor should personalise every session understanding where the student is…

The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . A tutor should be someone on whom a student could rely on about their studies and performance. apart for that , a tutor should understand a student’s weaknesses and…

I believe a tutor should not only help a student academically but also boost their confidence and foster a love for learning. A good tutor builds trust and encourages independent thinking that will equip students with the tools and mindset they need to succeed for the long-term. My strengths are that I am patient, the ability to break down…

It's to be able to notice the reasons behind my students' struggle and find out the right method and the right way to help them make adjustments and become better at it. A tutor should aim to clarify concepts, ensuring the student truly grasps the material rather than just memorising answers. Moreover, students should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring ideas without judgment. A vital aspect of tutoring is being non-judgemental. it is important for a tutor to make the student feel comfortable to share if they do not understand something or are struggling. If a student feels as if they will be judged or considered inadequate they are less likely to come to tutor’s for help. Building a strong relationship is extremely…

A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. Anybody's hold on Science is only as good as their understanding of the basics. So, it is best to focus on the…

I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

One of the most important things I have realised over helping my friends in year 12 would be to walk through the question and not actually doing the question for the student. Sure you could do the question for them and they could get full marks for an assignment or whatever, but they would not understand the fundamentals lying behind the question…

Make sure that you're not doing the work for them, only assisting them in their learning- For it will be them sitting the exam come the end of the year. Inside NorthgateTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Rhea worked on linear equations with unknowns on both sides and practiced finding variable values by substitution.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on trigonometry—solving for angles using sine, cosine, and tangent—and also revised coordinate geometry concepts like midpoints and plotting straight lines.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Isabelle tackled advanced differentiation skills including exponential and logarithmic derivatives, along with consolidating her understanding of the chain rule using textbook problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student needed to "work backwards from final concentrations" in ICE tables but struggled with recalling definitions and key steps, causing hesitation mid-task.

For Year 9 algebra, skipping careful simplification—especially when opening brackets—led to sign errors ("she tends to overlook…changing of the equation sign once the brackets have been extended").

In Year 7 coordinate geometry, forming equations from worded problems was a sticking point; as noted, confusion with signs persisted even after initial guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner often left fraction subtraction unfinished or missed checking double negatives, which meant answers were sometimes off by several marks.

Recent Achievements

A Northgate tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with logarithmic derivatives now confidently works through challenging problems independently, after struggling to apply the rules without guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who was often unsure about expanding brackets managed to solve increasingly complex questions by herself near the end of their session, no longer making sign errors that used to slow her down.

In Year 5, one student who would guess at converting fractions is now asking clarifying questions and accurately placing values on number lines before moving forward with her calculations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenacres Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cedar College.
