I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence as well as academic understanding. A good tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, identify areas where they need extra help, and explain concepts in a way that matches their learning style. It's also…

It's not just about explaining content—it’s about creating a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and thinking out loud. Besides knowledge and communication skills. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify and guide them through the biggest hurdles of their problems such as being lazy or poor time management that makes them struggle during their studies. I believe this is the most important since being able to help them solve their…

Having that listening ear for your student is important as every child is different. As such, it is important to know and acknowledge that each student will have a different skill set and thus succeed in different approaches. That listening ear will be helpful and important as this will give the student opportunities to explain themselves more…

I think that helping a student understand the basic concept of what they are learning to ensure that they have a strong foundation for future learning. This may lead to a new appreciation for the subject matter. As well as ensuring that no student remains behind their year level to develop more nuanced future adults. I believe that I am able to…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

Make the student feel safe enough to ask questions, explain the idea in a way that actually makes sense, and provide them with a way to practice so they can succeed on their own. Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. - Allow students to understand concepts and encourage curiosity I think as students we often feel that we are forced to learn things and sometimes it feels like labour which make people fear certain concepts. However, I think that as a tutor it is most important to remove that fear because knoweldge is not to be feared but to be known. -…

Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
