Providing sufficient support for a student is critical for learning. This could be through extra explanations or materials and working through it together. I believe providing emotional support is just as important as it allows you to connect with your student and as a result become a motivating factor which boosts their confidence. Knowing your…

Students often break down because they feel everything that is happening to them is unique to them. In reality this is not true, thus as a tutor I believe the most important thing is to be supportive to the student, but also being able to provide responses which are tailored to the understanding/way of learning of the student. My understanding of…

Probably to make sure they understand the underlying material rather than just giving the answers. Helping them through problems, and actually encouraging and motivating them along without just revealing the answers will help develop their problem solving skills, making the next problems easier to overcome. Preparation by the tutor is a must requirement before every lesson. In 1 on 1 tutoring a students needs will change weekly or monthly and its the tutors job to cater to these needs. In private tutoring catering for a students needs is vital which means communication between the tutor, the student and the parent. The tutor should also have…

I believe that tutors should be able to offer a balance between practical and theoretical advice for students when teaching a subject. Although its important that students develop a deep understanding of the subject they are learning, it's also important to offer practical advice such as exam tricks and tips, as well as which concepts to focus on…

The most important thing a tutor can and SHOULD absolutely do for students is to find out what truly lies behind the student’s weaknesses. Whether that could be weak foundational knowledge or not enough practice, to things like not fully understanding what the question is asking for or the topic they are learning. I believe that as a tutor, one of the most important things is to properly guide a student's growth by making the workplace enjoyable and fun. That way, the student is willing to learn new concepts, thus fostering a sense of improvement. I like to apply a variety of different methods of teaching to a student. For example, if a student does not…

Most tutors forget that students never enjoy tutoring, so it is important to set interesting challenges to keep students motivated and also polishing their skills using unorthodox methods. Too much of the time tutors just read off the textbook and don't provide alternative methods or keep the students' focus on their work. I believe the students…

I strongly believe the most basic yet crucial thing a tutor can do for their students is being accessible and flexible to the unique needs of the student. Inside PananiaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas worked on converting fractions to decimals and percentages, as well as understanding probability by assigning chances on a number line.

For Year 9, Sarah practised solving quadratic equations both by factorising and using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael focused on financial maths topics including calculating income, overtime, and commission with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 mathematics, one student's algebra working was "messy and hard to follow," making it difficult to trace errors—especially when multiplying with negatives.

During a Year 11 timed English task, another student struggled to interpret questions and showed little experience with exam pacing, resulting in incomplete responses.

In a Year 5 session, the urge for perfection led to over-erasing and hiding mistakes instead of correcting them openly; this slowed progress during division drills.

When confidence dipped in Year 4 maths, motivation lagged: "He hesitated on timestables, often pausing mid-question," leaving newer concepts unpracticed as anxiety set in.

Recent Achievements

One Panania tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously mixed up formulas is now reliably using the correct method to calculate gross and net income, even in tricky worded questions.

In Year 8 maths, a student who used to rush through factorising binomials is taking time to check each step—last session, he caught and fixed his own mistake without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a Year 4 student who hesitated with times tables now jumps confidently between 3s and 8s by using "jumping points" for recall; she finished her set of multiplication problems with no help needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Christopher's Catholic Primary School.
