Not only is knowing the content extremely important, but the way tutors teach the content is more important. Every student has their own needs, and a tutor must recognise that some teaching strategies might work for some but not work for others. My strengths is my teaching style. I believe my ability to connect with the student allows the student…

The most important thing I could do for my students is to inspire them through learning. For example, students can understand the complex topic better through application to daily situations. In Mathematics, this will better prepare them for complex questions and PSMTs as students will be learning real life applications as well as problem solving…

A good tutor should not only be able to solve problems efficiently, but more importantly, teach students the way to approach different problems. It is the way of thinking that matters in students' future learning. I am patient, responsible, patient and good at explaining problems in different approaches. The most important thing is to understand each student as a person so that you can personalise their learning and teach to their strengths. This comes with communicating and listening to what that student has to say to you. I like to ask students questions about their background with the subject, or related subjects and what they're hoping to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be committed to them and to learn the way in which the student understands concepts. By doing this, a tutor can teach the students in a way that ensure the best possibility for success and growth. I believe the most significant thing a tutor can do is shape their teaching based on the students weaknesses to enhance their learning to the fullest. I also believe teaching the students to be independent in their students is significant as you cannot be their for them 24/7, and helping them develop proper individual study skills is crucial for a…

A tutor's role should be to act as a role model that can act as an easy way to ask questions that might be hard to ask in a classroom. Encouraging students to grow at their own pace and give them the knowledge and confidence to go into not just exams but the future successfully. I am someone that learns by understanding how things work,…

Education is the single most powerful tool that can shape the way our youth thinks. It plays an instrumental role in moulding a child's perspective on almost everything. The most important that a tutor can do for a student is to be the best friend of that student. It is crucial to remember that there are many other aspects to that student than just academic. If you know the student well enough, that student will begin to enjoy studying and being able to perform great academically. I believe that is the greatest…

Some of the strengths that I believe are quite necessary for a tutor other than leadership are resilience, and the ability to properly analyse a students learning…

I consider instilling a growth mindset into a student is very important as that is the only way a student will see growth and start to succeed. With a positive mindset, students can embrace mistakes and see them as a learning curve to success. Additionally, building confidence in a student is also very important as it helps them overcome…

To me, one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be open and encouraging. Everyone (not only kids) gets embarrassed and scared to ask questions when they don't know what to do -- its our job to make sure they feel safe enough to ask so that they can fully grasp everything in their minds. If one of my students kept…

As a tutor is paid to improve a student's grades and so that's the underlying aim. But what a tutor should really do is teach a student how to learn better and improve. That means reminding them to proofread, read the criteria sheet before and after researching, and set up study plans that work with them (if that's palm cards, end of the week…

Inside ParkinsonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ed revised long division, converting between improper and mixed fractions, and worked through BOMDAS problems with multiple operations.

Year 11 student Ruby focused on surface area and volume of composite 3D shapes, alongside revision of linear word problems and properties of parallel and perpendicular lines using equations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace tackled bivariate data analysis for an assignment, discussing how to interpret relationships in scatterplots and practice final drafting skills for her mathematics project.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student received detailed assignment feedback in Math Methods but left several required graphs and proportional analysis incomplete; the tutor noted, "the assignment still requires a lot of improvement."

In Physics (Year 12), formatting and quality of evidence needed significant attention before submission.

For a Year 5 learner, repeated attempts to solve maths problems mentally led to frequent mistakes—"Ed tries to do everything in his head," wrote one tutor—which slowed progress when converting fractions or tackling long division.

A Year 8 student's diagrams in geometry were often hard to interpret due to cramped layouts, making it difficult to track which angle labels belonged where.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Parkinson noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling with derivatives, now works through basic differentiation independently and rarely needs reminders about the rules.

In senior Physics, one student recently handed in an improved assignment draft, having clearly used the previous session's feedback to refine his explanations and show deeper understanding—a real change from earlier drafts that missed key points.

Meanwhile, in Year 5, Ed is finally tackling long division solo; he catches and corrects most mistakes himself without waiting for hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sunnybank Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Calamvale Community College.
