I believe every student has their own way of learning, so I focus on building a study routine that works for them — whether it’s setting up a realistic revision schedule, practicing exam-style questions, or using targeted strategies to tackle procrastination. My approach is to pinpoint their strengths, address any gaps, and equip them with…

I attended many tutoring facilities during my time at school hence I have learnt the most valuable things a tutor can offer to a student is the patience and a change to be able to complete the work themselves, which giving them a few hints to get them on the right track. or if they're completely stuck to give a detailed explanation of the…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

As a tutor, it is most important to be patient and kind to the student. I always see myself as a peer of my students, and what I am doing is to help them build confidence in the subjects. I am able to break the complex content into pieces and explain every piece in detail to the students. I am good at engaging with students and responding to their…

Improve the students core understanding of the subject matter. Once they understand the core principles not only will they be more successful in exams, but they will take greater enjoyment from the subject. This can then lead them to want to study further. I'm a friendly, easy to get along with individual which makes tutees comfortable and…

Provide a safe and welcoming learning environment. If you student does not feel comfortable or confident in making mistakes, then nothing will be learnt. Providing a relaxing environment and being open can help students relax and feel more confident in their ideas and learning. I think my strengths are my patience and resilience. When tutoring,…

I did touch on this in my previous answer but I'll say it again because I think it's that important! Encouraging students to love and see the beauty of the subjects they're studying is essential as it serves to catalyse their improvement. I have seen this multiple times in many students. Another equally important facet of tutoring is making sure…

I believe the most important thing is for a tutor to help students ask the right questions in their learning journey, rather than just helping them find…

I take offence that students aren't given an insight into the immense art and beauty that goes behind mathematics. I take priority in showing students the history behind the math they study. I always put emphasis on proofs, a failure to do so usually means a bad start to university. At the end of each tutorial, it is imperative that the tutor…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are threefold. First, build confidence, many students already know more than they think, but anxiety or past frustration gets in the way. A tutor should help them trust their own ability. Second, teach how to think, not just what to think. In subjects like chemistry and physics,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's self-belief while teaching them how to learn, rather than just what to learn. By creating an encouraging space where mistakes are treated as normal stepping stones, a tutor helps a student build real resilience and master fundamental problem-solving frameworks. When you combine that…

make sure students are comfortable with the tutor. Be compassionate and kind towards the students so they don't feel ashamed of asking questions or admitting they don't understand a concept. Understand the learning level and ability of the student and work around it. Simplify complex concepts and break them down to the student's understanding…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel like they can actually handle the work on their own. It Is easy to just give someone the answers, but that doesn't help them in the long run. Encourage them. I can give throw as much information at them as I want but without encouraging them and reassuring them they've got this, the information's worthless. Inside ParkvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Max built confidence with column addition and subtraction, then moved on to identifying odd and even numbers and describing fractions like halves and quarters using visual aids.

Year 5 student Emily practiced long multiplication, including multiplying two-digit numbers, and learned to convert between improper and mixed fractions by representing them on number lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Josh focused on perimeter calculations for composite rectilinear shapes and consolidated understanding of area through grid-based problems before tackling worded questions involving mass and different units.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student struggled to recall subtraction methods and the reasons behind odd/even numbers when put on the spot, as a tutor observed: "she was unable to recall the exact methods of adding and subtracting, and the reason behind concepts of odd and even." This gap showed up especially during in-lesson questions without homework reinforcement.

In Year 7 mathematics, long division remained a stumbling block; confusion persisted after repeated attempts, particularly when switching between strategies or times tables were skipped. Without consistent written practice at home, these foundational processes often faded between lessons—leaving students unsure mid-task or reverting to less effective approaches under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A Parkville tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who, after weeks of hesitation, finally started writing down her own instructions for homework—she used to rely on verbal prompts but now wants reminders she can check herself.

In Year 11 maths, one student who always struggled with worded multiplication and division problems is now independently tackling them using arrays and can explain his reasoning out loud without guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who previously avoided symmetry exercises, surprised the tutor by completing both sides of a symmetry drawing accurately during the session and even asked for an extra challenge.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University High School.
