The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really good at…

The most important thing a tutor can do is never give up on a student. A tutor needs to be patient with his pupils since every student cannot grasp a particular concept at the same rate , therefore patience and understanding the student is more important. A tutor should also give time for students to practice as math is all about logic and…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students become independent learners rather than making them dependent on the tutor. I do not believe in spoon-feeding answers all the time. Instead, I believe a tutor should guide students, encourage them to think independently, and help them build confidence in their own…

The most important things a tutor can do for students is to teach as well as keep them motivated on their progress. A tutor's responsibility includes building a student's confidence by helping them believe in their abilities, and to ensure they develop a deep understanding of concepts, not just memorization. Tailoring the teaching approach to the student's learning style is important for making the material more accessible. Also, creating a safe and supportive…

The most important thing is simplify the concept and explain it with patience. If the tutor needs to explain the simplest concept a 100 times and simplify it further every time, they should do it. Knowledge is important yes, but if it cannot be communicated with patience and this iterative approach of simplification unless it’s understood,…

For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. I think the most important thing is to understand the student's cognitive ability and be able to relate to their world. Giving them examples using whatever they're into, for example, cartoons/video games, in order to teach a concept goes a long way. There isn't a bible when it comes to teaching, it's an evolving process, which gets better over…

It's super important that tutors are understanding, patient, and believe in their students. I prioritise instilling confidence in my students. In maths, I treat methods as skills to learn rather than processes to memorise. They are more like riding a bike than memorising a recipe. A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

Inside Pascoe ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adam completed reading comprehension tasks with multiple choice questions and wrote a creative paragraph about what he would do if he saw a dinosaur in the backyard.

Year 10 student Lucy focused on the roles and responsibilities of judges, accused persons, prosecution, and legal practitioners in the court system, as well as exploring the purposes of criminal sanctions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Harsh worked through key psychology topics including subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems for responding to sensory stimuli and examined how neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA influence neural communication.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to start sentences without prompting and often needed help generating ideas for writing, which slowed progress on tasks.

In a Year 7 English lesson, he rushed through multiple-choice questions and relied on teacher approval before circling answers, leading to uncertainty and second-guessing.

Across several year levels, spelling errors recurred—especially when work was completed in haste or without checking.

A Year 10 student took too long on homework, then hurried later tasks "for the sake of completion," resulting in missed corrections and lower-quality responses. This left him feeling unsure about his final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale tutor noticed a Year 10 student recently started tackling practice questions independently without checking her notes, a big step up from earlier sessions when she relied on them for every answer.

In Year 8 English, a student who used to avoid reading aloud now volunteers to read whole pages and even goes back to fix any sentences that sound off—something he was once hesitant about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun spelling unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and trying on his own before asking for help, finishing last week's spelling test with almost no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pascoe Vale Primary School.
