A tutor can provide and exaggerate his knowledge and incorporate in students in a way that is easily understandable to the listener. They tutor students individually or in small groups and provide a variety of services from study skills, note-taking strategies, test preparation, homework assistance, and to grasp new concepts. I can make studying…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

The most important role of a tutor is to explain concepts in an intuitive, understandable way. Often in school students learn the rules of maths, but not why the rules are they way they are. I find that developing a deeper, fundamental understanding of mathematical concepts allows students to apply them to more advanced problems that may not have…

Building a student’s confidence is crucial, as it empowers them to tackle challenges independently and believe in their abilities. A tutor should also make learning enjoyable and relevant, which helps ignite…

The hardest hump for a student to get over is laying the foundations and complete understanding of the basics to propel from. I believe that a more holistic approach to teaching and learning is far more valuable than running through endless practice questions. Making sure the student is not only capable of doing the basics but fully understands…

Having a growth mindset as a tutor in combination with the 7 C's are the most important qualities for a tutor. The 7 C's are: control (coming prepared for the lesson and having a plan), clarity (providing straightforward explanations and finding ways to clarify confusing concepts), conversation (engage and interact with students), care (wanting…

I believe a good tutor should pose as a role mode and an inspiring figure which the students can look up to. Additionally, the tutor should be transparent and be open to every student's classroom needs and difficulties because each student is different and hence their approach to learning is diverse. I believe I can explain the difficult concepts…

I am able to articulate concepts particularly well concerning Mathematics and Physics, so walking through some difficult concepts with students wouldn't be a…

I feel one of the most important aspects of the role is definitely the building of confidence, encouraging students to take a leap even when unsure. I also feel that ensuring students don't feel ashamed or embarrassed if they do get things wrong. Creating a safe and fun environment is hugely important to ensure their sessions aren't seen as a…

As a tutor I believe my role is to build their confidence, create a safe space for their learning and help them develop independent thinking. Ensuring that each lesson is well understood by the student by delivering the lesson in a simple and easy-to-understand manner and listening to their questions. It’s essential to break down complex concepts into manageable parts and explain them in a way that makes sense to the student. Using analogies, visual aids, and real-world examples can be very effective. Establishing a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is vital for…

I believe that a tutor can bring out a sense of accomplishment and excitement that teachers in large classrooms can't. Tutors can guide students to answers without giving them away for free, and provide one-on-one attention which boosts confidence. I think the most important think a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence in their own abilities. Schooling, especially ones centred around standardised exams, encourage students to master themselves in order to achieve standardised tasks; however, no part of the curriculum teaches them how to do this. I feel as though it is the…

Be understanding and empower them. IF they are struggling, the ability to stop them from being frustrated or minimize it is the most important skill other than being good at explaining concepts. Inside RandwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ben practised **elapsed time questions** and worked on identifying and drawing 2D and 3D shapes.

Year 7 student William focused on solving **algebraic equations**, including collecting like terms, as well as applying **Pythagoras' theorem** to problem-solving tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student revised surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders, alongside tackling **advanced factorisation using the difference of two squares formula**.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to apply structured working in algebra, preferring mental calculation—he was hesitant to do so—which made it harder to spot method errors during factorisation tasks.

In Year 10 biology, another student avoided asking questions when unsure about cell organelles, making it tough to address misunderstandings on the spot.

A younger learner (Year 4) sometimes left homework incomplete, especially with worded problems that introduced new formats.

One secondary student became distracted mid-lesson (she can get easily distracted, taking her away from the work), which slowed progress through problem-solving practice and left some review tasks unfinished by session's end.

Recent Achievements

One Randwick tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when facing tricky probability questions now bringing his own challenging examples to sessions and breaking them down into clear steps without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously unsure about multi-step algebra problems, surprised himself by flying through practice sets and even correcting his own errors with negative numbers before the tutor stepped in.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who often rushed through work has started pausing to plan out answers, showing real care with working out—he finished last lesson by neatly solving every multiplication question and checking his methods independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marcellin College.
