One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide understanding and gentle encouragement. It has been my experience that, if a student feels like the work is overwhelming and the teacher isn't listening, then the student will simply cease to care or give up. Listening to a student and helping them to work through what…

A tutor must not only teach the student the concepts that they are learning at the present time but also guide them in being able to learn efficiently for their work in the future. It is important to develop good habits early on so that a student may progress further in their learning. I believe that I am able to relate to students very well in…

I feel above all, it is important for a tutor to invest in the success of the student. to make sure that the student not only walks away with an understanding of the concepts being taught, but to make sure the student is empowered with the ability to be able to carry out that skill both in class and in an exam type situation. I think my hard work…

I believe that the most important thing for a tutor to do is help the student understand how to learn well. This can be done by fostering a love of learning. The tutor should teach the student learning techniques that assist with what they are learning now, and have life-long applications. I am patient with helping others of various learnings…

Listen to what they need, and what they are struggling with. Be patient if they don't understand something at first, and if they are still struggling with the concept after a while, trying teaching it to them in a different way so that they do understand. Have a full understanding of what you're tutoring before you try and explain it. I'm a very…

To understand that not every brain is the same; people aren't 'one size fits all' when it comes to learning, and you can't expect to mould a student to fit your learning expectations. Instead, a tutor needs to be flexible enough to fit the student's needs and goals. A depressed student will need something different from an autistic student, who…

The most important that a tutor can do for a student is to be the best friend of that student. It is crucial to remember that there are many other aspects to that student than just academic. If you know the student well enough, that student will begin to enjoy studying and being able to perform great academically. I believe that is the greatest…

As a tutor is paid to improve a student's grades and so that's the underlying aim. But what a tutor should really do is teach a student how to learn better and improve. That means reminding them to proofread, read the criteria sheet before and after researching, and set up study plans that work with them (if that's palm cards, end of the week…

The most important a tutor can do for a student is that they make sure the student knows that they are just as capable to be independent and build confidence in their own abilities; furthermore, they should give the students a chance to study in the most effective way based on their own individual learning styles and thought process. In summary,…

I believe the most significant thing a tutor can do is shape their teaching based on the students weaknesses to enhance their learning to the fullest. I also believe teaching the students to be independent in their students is significant as you cannot be their for them 24/7, and helping them develop proper individual study skills is crucial for a…

To me, one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be open and encouraging. Everyone (not only kids) gets embarrassed and scared to ask questions when they don't know what to do -- its our job to make sure they feel safe enough to ask so that they can fully grasp everything in their minds. If one of my students kept…

Help them understand the why behind the answers. Be supportive and patient during the learning process. I feel it is important to recognise what the student is looking to get out of the tutoring experience. Although I have mentioned a lot about developing students' interests in the subjects, it is also important to realise that many students won't go on to develop careers in either fields and may simply be looking at improving their grades to open…

Since the v first session with Radu, we were all totally hooked! He is not just the BEST tutor but the most amazing person. Radu has the ability to calmly install confidence into his students and ensure that they fully understand all the concepts, not just learn them. He is kind, professional and a honest joy to have around ??

Inside RiverhillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Cara focused on consolidating times tables (4, 6, 7, 8, and 9) through oral quizzes and practiced converting between decimals, percentages, and fractions.

Year 11 student Sanvi worked on binomial probability (including mean and standard deviation for discrete random variables) and tackled calculus problems involving differentiation of logarithmic functions using the chain rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex reviewed integration by substitution in the context of probability density functions and revised polynomial division alongside applications of the factor theorem.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, several students hesitated to set out their reasoning clearly in integration and probability questions—one tutor noted, "he skipped stating 'by product rule' in test working," which made justifying answers harder.

In a Year 9 Chemistry session, the analysis section was left unfinished and required better organization before moving on.

For a Year 4 student, forgetting to keep a homework notebook meant tasks were often missed or incomplete.

During advanced trigonometry (Year 12), relying heavily on calculators for standard values led to gaps when tackling unfamiliar problems without technology in assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Riverhills tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with integration by substitution, now independently applies the method to tackle unfamiliar calculus problems.

In another session, a high schooler working on chemistry assignments has started her work early for the first time and is now connecting concepts across topics without prompting—a big shift from previously leaving tasks until the last minute.

Meanwhile, Cara in Year 4 has moved from relying on notes for times tables to scoring full marks in quizzes purely from memory and now volunteers to try new problem types before being asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Middle Park State School.
