I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

Although it is highly important that a tutor teaches their students the material covered in the syllabus, it is equally as important that the tutor teaches their students the tools required to succeed in a competitive academic environment. As a tutor, I instil in my students a great work ethic, teaching them highly effective study and time…

Identifying the individual's strengths and weaknesses. Not only trying to help building on the weak points, but also reassuring and building their confidence by highlighting how much they already know. Also finding a strategy that they learn best, e.g. explaining new concepts by touching on processes they are already familiar with. I believe two…

Create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel confident to learn and make mistakes. Be empathetic and put yourself in the shoes of the student whole teaching them, to understand how they view the subject at hand and how you can help them understand it better. It's also important to be well prepared and to be willing to listen to the student's ideas and concerns and open to research anything needed in more depth to help the…

Ensure that the student is gaining confidence and is improving. I believe its not the final result that counts, but its ensuring the student's mental health is taken care or whilst the student is experiencing a steady improvement. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the subject itself, and the skills it requires, as this is what seems to be holding back most students from achieving good grades. My strengths are the fact that I enjoy teaching and will have a lot of patience in aiding students along their path, as many of the…

I believe that a tutor should first understand the individual needs of students before beginning to teach, as a one-size-fits-all approach is rarely effective. Ensuring high levels of engagement is crucial, as it significantly enhances the learning experience. Additionally, possessing patience is essential, as it allows the tutor to effectively…

To boost confidence and motivation. I believe that you cannot force a student to learn, but you can guide them to do their best. If the student does not wish to learn, there is not much I can do to improve their grades. But, if the students are highly motivated and willing to learn, even if their grades are below average, they can rapidly improve…

I believe it is the tutor's job to tailor the lessons and concepts to each individual student. In addition to teaching to the student's weaknesses, the tutor must make connections to the student's interests. The tutor should also recognise and minimise the student's weaknesses. Most importantly, the tutor's primary responsibility is to equip the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the learning process fun, because at the end of the day, if the student isn't enjoying what they are doing(whether it be succeeding or seeing improvement), they aren't going to remember anything. The most important thing is to motivate to them so that they want to learn, instead of thinking that studying is just for the sake of having good results in school. Inside RivertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lara worked on graphing linear equations, finding gradients from tables and coordinates, and using the midpoint formula.

In Year 9, Ethan practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination, as well as tackling worded problems that required forming and rearranging algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia focused on expanding and factorising quadratic equations, then used the quadratic formula to solve for unknowns in standard form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly skipped writing out full algebraic steps when rearranging trigonometric ratios, leading to confusion between numerators and denominators—"I had to keep reminding her to write out the whole equation before she tried to solve."

In Year 9 statistics, another found it difficult to organise data in Excel, losing time hunting for functions rather than analysing results.

A Year 8 learner often left worded questions incomplete, misreading which triangle side was required, then hesitated to use provided formula sheets.

After setbacks with negative numbers in simultaneous equations (Year 11), calculator reliance increased and confidence dropped mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Riverton noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to attempt algebraic questions now starts each one independently, writing out every step before asking for feedback.

In a recent high school session, another student who struggled with interpreting linear graphs was able to accurately draw lines from equations and explain the meaning of slope and intercept without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to guess at place value questions has begun talking through her reasoning out loud, using number tables confidently to find answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverton Primary School.
