Inspire them. Anyone can regurgitate textbook material in a different way. But only few can truly educate and inspire their students to become the very best version of themselves. Some of the strengths that I believe are quite necessary for a tutor other than leadership are resilience, and the ability to properly analyse a students learning…

Attention, commitment and communication are the most important things that I consider a tutor can do for a student. My strengths as a tutor are: -I'm very organised as it is one of the most important strengths because it helps the tutor and the student to complete tasks on time. -Patience is another strength for me as I have to deal with…

I think a tutor has the ability to cultivate a students interest and enjoyment of a subject. I believe that a student will succeed in a subject, such as Mathematics, if they enjoy it. Due to this, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the subject that is being taught fun, and help get the kid interested in the…

I believe persistence is key when learning mathematics. I have found that even if a mathematical concept is completely alien to me, as long as I kept reading and kept trying, I would always find I understood it. To show patience and know students do have the ability to understand concepts, would mean a great deal to their progress. My strengths…

I consider instilling a growth mindset into a student is very important as that is the only way a student will see growth and start to succeed. With a positive mindset, students can embrace mistakes and see them as a learning curve to success. Additionally, building confidence in a student is also very important as it helps them overcome…

I believe that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to explain the concept behind a problem more thoroughly than do the problem itself with them. This can be achieved by breaking up a complex problem, which may rely on more than one mathematical concept such as trig and calculus. By splitting up the parts of the…

Every student is unique! There is no single approach to curriculum that will guarantee success for every individual. It is for this reason that it is imperative for a tutor to provide a personalised, growth-oriented atmosphere that provides each student an equal opportunity to improve and ultimately succeed. It is pivotal that the tutor is always easily approachable as otherwise shy students may be reluctant to ask the tutor questions and thus those shy kids may end up falling behind. In addition, I feel that tutors must always be supportive towards the student as any harsh or negative comments may severely hinder a students willingness and ability to…

One of the most important things I believe a tutor can do is to make their student confident in themselves. A tutor's role should be to act as a role model that can act as an easy way to ask questions that might be hard to ask in a classroom. Encouraging students to grow at their own pace and give them the knowledge and confidence to go into not just exams but the future successfully. I am someone that learns by understanding how things work,…

The most important things a tutor can do are: 1. Provide a safe and supportive environment where the student feels comfortable sharing their concerns. This helps to identify the student’s preferred learning style and areas to focus on. 2. Give the student the tools they need to learn on their own. Instead of just giving solutions, a tutor…

Danielle, Rochedale South

Inside Rochedale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice practised adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Jack focused on algebraic skills including simplifying, factorising, and performing operations on expressions in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled financial maths by working through problems involving simple interest calculations and using real-life scenarios such as credit card purchases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often left reports unfinished or with unclear structure; "report needs to be written up in a proper structure," one tutor noted.

In Year 8, another arrived unprepared—without a notebook or working calculator—which slowed the start of geometry lessons.

A Year 10 learner frequently practised only familiar textbook questions at home, missing out on harder problem-solving types and leaving gaps when tackling quadratic equations by completing the square.

One primary student hesitated to show working for surface area problems, sometimes erasing mistakes rather than correcting them—making it difficult to track their thinking mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Rochedale South tutor noted that a Year 11 student, who previously relied on memorising steps for equations, learned to set up and solve problems independently using proper methods—a real shift in approach.

Another high school student not only completed all revision materials but also corrected common mistakes in compound interest, showing greater care and accuracy than before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who often lost focus managed to stay engaged throughout the session and eagerly used props to understand 3D shapes in 2D drawings. The lesson finished with her confidently explaining how she solved the worksheet questions out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan North Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Primary School.
