I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to first understand them. Understanding the student and their current level and mindset is crucial to ensuring a supportive and welcoming environment, which in turn promotes learning and success. From experience, each student is different and requires their own level of care.…

I believe the most important thing is contributing to a positive and engaging environment for the student whilst simultaneously improving assessment or examination marks. This allows the student too actively and voluntarily complete work and studies that benefits them, to ultimately respond better in testing situations or assessments. My strengths…

A tutors primary role is to ensure the students understands the content. In my experience this is not as simple as it sounds, as many students are taught how to answer questions rather then being taught mathematics; abstracting difficult concepts into simpler forms, through the use of analogies and other explanatory methods is key in allowing a…

Tutors should be resourceful, considering varying teaching methods to allow students to more easily understand concepts. Tutors should work within the abilities of the students and therefore should…

Having come from an extremely competitive mathematics university course, I fully understand the value of finding a method of studying that resonates with the individual. Laying down a strong foundation of knowledge is key in not just giving the student a full understanding of the material, but will allow the student to then apply and develop their…

I believe a tutor should be the person to help facilitate a student thrive academically. While teachers do their best, they have lots of students to worry about, whereas a tutor can provide the specific answers and assistance on those questions that weren't answered in class. For me I am very focused on creating an enjoyable and person-centred…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make sure…

There are a number of short-term and long-term goals I have for my students/mentees: In the short-term, I seek to make material engaging and more easily digestible. Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McAuley Catholic Primary School.
