Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a chemistry tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends…

Be friendly to the student, show the student that they are confident in them, allow the student to think for him/herself. A tutor should make the student understand the importance of anything they teach the student ,and make sure the student has grasped the concept in the most simplest way to the student. A tutor should understand that each…

The most important thing for a chemistry tutor is their ability to be patient and encouraging. Being knowledgeable alone isn't sufficient, as they should also have the personality traits to be a good teacher. Additionally, tutors need to cater their teaching to match the needs of each student to achieve the best outcomes possible. The tutor should…

The most important thing that I can do is to allow the student to learn with fun and without any stress. This can be done with a broad explanation on topics and giving examples from our day to day activities. Consequently, a student will able to catch up all the difficult theories easily. For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

They should also equip students with the skills necessary to successfully complete assessments they are given, as understanding…

The most important thing or a challenge for a chemistry tutor is to involve a student in a subject not just for it's technicality but for its application in real life. Therefore it's important to find the bridge between what you study and real life in not all but most cases to keep studies interesting. If not, find a funny way or create a…

I consider comprehension and confidence in one's skills to be the most crucial thing a chemistry tutor should endeavour for their students to grasp. Once a student's comprehension level reaches a certain stage, their progress will be much faster and smoother. Whilst also their confidence becomes a fuel of reinforcement for their drive in achieving…

Since this is a 1-on-1 tutorial, the tutor must give full attention to the student. Also to find ways to make sessions enjoyable but not to the point of sacrificing the time for teaching. And again to be patient so that the student can fully understand the topics being discussed. My best quality as a tutor would be my patience. I know a lot of…

Inside SandhurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Alex explored polynomial and composite functions, then practised differentiation techniques in the context of function analysis.

In Year 10, Sam focused on applying the sine and cosine rules to solve non-right-angled triangle problems and worked through Pythagoras' theorem in three dimensions using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia revised highest common factors and lowest common multiples before tackling prime factorisation using factor trees.

Recent Challenges

Often forgetting to bring their calculator and notes home left the Year 11 student unable to complete homework or revise formulas for chemistry and physics.

In Year 9, a tutor noted that "she needs to be clearer when writing down the workings so that she'll be able to check back on her steps later," especially in algebra tasks—unclear layout made it difficult to catch errors.

One senior student hesitated to persist with challenging questions, sometimes giving up too quickly during complex trigonometry revision; this led to unfinished problems and frustration building mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Sandhurst tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess when stuck on equations now actively asks for help, then applies new strategies straight away—last week she solved transposition problems independently for the first time.

In a recent high school chemistry session, another student who struggled with oxidation numbers started confidently assigning them without prompts and even checked her answers using textbook examples.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often mixed up multiplication facts was able to work through all seven times tables in one go, pausing only once to self-correct before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carrum Downs Secondary College.
