The most important thing as a tutor is to put yourself in the student's shoes and make sure they are learning and taking in something useful after every session. This makes the most out of their time and also helps to make them more confident in their studies, which also builds trust between the student and tutor which is key to making them…

To understand how the child learns, and what they respond to best. As a teacher in a classroom may not be giving them the attention or understanding they require. I believe communication is my strongest strength, as my ability to communicate ideas and encourage children to do the same is corner stone to successful…

The confidence to attempt and solve increasingly complex problems independently. The ability of a tutor to impart an understanding of the foundations is the most important thing a tutor can do. Ability to breakdown more complex problems into manageable sections thus enabling the student to apply and practice the solving process rather then…

Being able to be a good friend of the student is also a rare quality every tutor should possess. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring students from various background. My good…

Expanding on what I have written earlier, I think that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be prepared, and always willing to learn. I think this requires being a bit humble, and accepting that, even with something that may appear to be far below the tutor's learning, there may still be things that aren't known or have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them and notice. I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

Firstly, the most important thing that a tutor should do is build up confidence in their kids that they have the potential to achieve their goals and are destined for the best. This instantly boosts up the kids for striving for accuracy and their dreams. Secondly, a tutor should never be a demotivator in any manner. This is important as any…

Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. To encourage them to keep going and not give up, because it can get really upsetting to the student if they can't understand a specific thing after some time spent on it. A tutor should be able to communicate clearly with a student. It is important for a tutor to be patient with a student as different students learn at different paces. A tutor should be able understand the learning style of a student and have the ability to explain a concept in multiple ways to ensure that the student is confident with a concept.…

Farah, Tranmere

Inside TranmereTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sienna focused on simplifying fractions and exploring equivalent fractions, using visual models to reinforce understanding.

In Year 10, Nick worked through differential calculus problems, including optimisation scenarios and sign diagrams for first and second derivatives.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jessica tackled integral calculus by solving problems involving finding the area under a curve and also practiced interpreting results from statistics exam questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on algebra was encouraged to organise her written work more clearly, as scattered calculations made sign errors harder to spot—"she may also benefit from organising her working out more clearly to avoid confusion."

In Year 12 physics, a student struggled with drawing diagrams for kinematics questions and matching variables, which slowed progress during problem-solving.

Meanwhile, several senior students (Years 11–12) arrived at sessions without having completed assigned homework or revision tasks; one missed all set networks practice, leading to time being spent re-explaining concepts rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Tranmere tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 11 student who, after often guessing when stuck, has begun actively asking for clarification and working through mistakes out loud—this openness wasn't there just weeks ago.

In another high school session, a student who struggled to apply the sum and product rule in algebra was able to independently factorise several challenging problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who previously rushed through addition and subtraction now takes time to check her answers, catching errors herself before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
