Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be a good listener. It is very important to know and understand why a student is facing a problem in a particular situation so that it can be tackled. The tutor should also be compassionate and patient toward the student and should be able to adapt themselves as per the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are: 1) provide clarity, 2) build confidence, and 3) foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn't just help students get the right answers, they help students understand the process and develop the skills to tackle future challenges on their own. Encouraging students to ask questions, think…

To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

The ability to explain concepts and solutions to problems in a way that the student can understand. What can look very simple to us can seem like a foreign language to our students, so the skill to break these down and make the student believe that what just looked impossible to them is actually very doable is invaluable as a tutor. Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is creating an environment and relationship where the student understands and feels comfortable knowing that it is okay not to understand something and it is ok to ask for, or need help. I believe that still being a student myself allows me to relate to students and the frustrations…

Inside Tuart HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia worked through trigonometry, focusing on using sine, cosine, and tangent to find missing sides and angles in right-angled triangles, as well as reviewing the relationship between angle of inclination and gradient.

Year 11 student Jack practised normal distribution questions, including calculating probabilities and quantiles from worded problems and revising statistical terms like mean, median, and mode.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ella tackled redox reactions by writing half-equations for oxidation/reduction processes and applying oxidation numbers to identify species being oxidised or reduced.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without a maths book, making it hard to follow the syllabus-based lesson—"it took extra time to get organised," noted the tutor.

In Year 10, one student did not complete volume homework and admitted uncertainty about textbook chapters, which delayed feedback on their understanding.

For a Year 12 Chemistry learner, exam preparation was disrupted by incomplete revision questions; they struggled to plan an effective study timetable and missed practicing key calculation sets.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, repeated use of the same literary features in short responses limited essay depth and left little material for feedback discussion.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Tuart Hill noticed a Year 12 student who, after weeks of confusion with normal distribution, confidently solved both textbook and past exam questions independently last session.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for clarification, is now actively bringing her own questions to lessons and using diagrams to explain concepts—she even tackled some extension chemistry problems unprompted.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with basic multiplication can now multiply by 10, 100, and beyond without pausing, finishing all practice sums correctly on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Osborne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tuart Hill Primary School.
