Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to enrich their understanding and reinvigorate or catalyze a passion in a particular subject. Nowadays, a student's passion for a particular subject dwindles as they go further and further into their high school career. This may be due to external factors such as pressure or…

The most important things the tutor should do for a student are understanding where the student needs more help, which is the advantage a private tutoring can provide, being patient with the student's understanding, bringing the enthusiasm to the class so the student can be more energised, be well prepared for all the content thoroughly before the…

Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

Listen, for a student to learn they ask questions and it’s important for a tutor to be able to listen and respond. I think my strengths are in my patience and empathy. I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I am proud of my ability to teach and explain concepts to others effectively and thoroughly, which I…

Being both supportive and empathetic are important. Encouraging a student and not making a huge deal about mistakes while congratulating correct responses builds a student's self-confidence which makes them perform better overall and develop a liking for the subject. Also, being understanding when the student struggles to perform when facing more…

The most important things a tutor can do is help students understand that being wrong or not being as fast or as good at studying is not a bad thing. Giving motivation, goals and direction. I always loved tutors who could give me a purpose to life on top of knowledge of school content. Just being a support for the student in question. Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Inside VillawoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Adam worked on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Sarah practised solving linear equations and inequalities, using graphing techniques to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jacob focused on surds and indices—including rationalisation—and tackled probability problems under exam-style conditions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left homework incomplete, which led to confusion with formula recall during volume and area tasks; "she does not do her homework on the regular—this results in a lack of memory pegs," noted one tutor.

In Year 10, another student relied heavily on their calculator for basic arithmetic in algebra questions, missing opportunities to build mental fluency.

For a senior student working through complex surds and indices problems, unclear written working made it difficult to spot errors or understand reasoning upon review. This often resulted in extra time spent deciphering steps instead of progressing with revision.

Recent Achievements

One Villawood tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions—she now regularly pauses mid-problem to check her understanding, instead of pushing through in silence.

In Year 11 chemistry, another student made clear progress moving from confusion about endothermic and exothermic reactions to confidently explaining the difference and identifying examples on their own during revision.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who struggled with division last term has started memorising key steps and can now complete short division problems independently without prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
