It is very important for the tutor to build their students confidence by celebrating their progress and encouraging their efforts. Tutors should also adapt their teaching style to their students specific needs. The tutor should also ensure their student's understanding is complete, that they aren't simply regurgitating information. I am patient, I…

As a tutor, it is important to be communicative with the students where ideas and thought process can be discussed so that learning can be improved. Communicating with a positive attitude will encourage students to try their best even when mistakes are made as doing something is better than nothing. - Being about to break down complex concepts and…

One of the most important things is to ensure that a tutor is able to make the student comfortable during the lesson. Working in a suitable environment allows the student to perform at a higher performance. This includes bonding with the student and encouraging them whenever possible, providing positive reinforcement. Another important thing is…

Finding gaps in a students knowledge and helping to fill them, facilitating a student to learn at their own pace and in their own way, and ensuring that the student can handle problems without my help once they've learned the concept. To make the student comfortable enough. For example, when the tutor has explained something multiple times but the student still couldn’t grasp the topic, the student is still free to ask the teacher about the topic again. I am extremely patient and tend to begin with the chapters that are related to the next one. This way, the student doesn't…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student has completely understood the concept. It is useless to move forward if they don't understand the basics. I am able to understand the thought process of a student and their weak points. This allows me to help construct their concepts from the base up and ensure they can solve any…

Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

The most important thing that a tutor must do is form a genuine connection with the student based on trust and integrity. This can be achieved through humour, motivation and sharing likes/dislikes. The most crucial role of a tutor is to simplify and engage with the content. Since students are already learning the material in school but struggling to grasp it, it is essential to use a different strategy. By making the content simpler and more engaging, the tutor can help the student to not only understand the material but to also apply it in…

Just being attentive and considerate of a student's needs. I know if I'm paying money I want to really get the most out of it and see it reflected in my results. A vital aspect also is the ability of a tutor to adapt to situations where some methods of teachings don't work. However, it's also important for a tutor to remain calm and composed as it…

Most important this a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to surpass their limits and expose them to their potential. I believe as a young tutor, and as an individual who has experienced many ups and downs in his life, I’ll have a lot to relate to with the students. This will help the students feel more comfortable with me and thus…

With my previous experience both as being a tutor and being tutored by someone else, I believe a tutor should pay a fundamental role in empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Inside Voyager PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lara worked through right-angled trigonometry and bearings, applying diagrams to visualise angle problems.

For Year 8, Ethan practised factorising algebraic fractions and also tackled multiplying and dividing fractions in context.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael focused on negative integers—adding, subtracting, and multiplying them—and reviewed strategies for exam-style questions involving these concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra was observed hesitating before writing answers, often second-guessing herself even when the process was correct; "she needs to be more confident in her calculations," one note read.

In Year 4 maths, there were repeated instances of confusing times tables and forgetting to add a zero in multiplication, causing her to pause mid-problem and check with the tutor for reassurance.

When tackling negative integers in Year 9, confusion set in after -15, slowing progress and increasing uncertainty.

These moments led to lost momentum during lessons and reliance on immediate feedback rather than independent practice.

Recent Achievements

One Voyager Point tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to wait for correction now spotting her own mistakes and trying extra questions without prompting, especially in algebra.

Another high school learner is getting quicker at identifying when to use formulas for similar triangles, and has started explaining his reasoning out loud—something he avoided before.

With a Year 4 student, there's been real progress memorising times tables; she now attempts the 7s and 8s by herself after struggling with recall last term, and last session completed all the division sums independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holsworthy Public School.
