The most important thing a tutor can do is driving the students motivation for a subject because no matter the ability, effort is always the predetermining factor to a students success. When I explain the importance to the child about why they should be passionate about achieving amazing results, their effort increases and their marks always…

A tutor should build trust, listen actively, and empower the student to believe in their abilities. Beyond just improving academic performance, I think it’s important to help students develop a growth mindset, feel more in control of their learning, and know that it’s okay to make mistakes My greatest strengths are patience, adaptability, and…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

A tutor should give the most custom type of teaching to each student as general lectures are also given in school and their is no point in repeating the same. Consistency is the most important in my opinion as some students may face issues learning and I just need to stay consistent with them and maybe even teach them in some other…

A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to guide them academically and aid their learning outside of their classroom. I believe it is important for tutors to help achieve the students academic goals, and be a mentor that they can rely on anytime. I think for a tutor a combination of two things is the best, firstly giving the students confidence as I found that my tutor gave my confidence in my abilities that I previously had not experienced in some subjects which eventually led to my success. Also providing the best ability to teach and foster improvements in knowledge and skills to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to teach them concepts which they will remember for life instead of memorising them for a short period of time. I will aim to teach methods that the student will be able to apply in different questions. A tutor should also review questions with the student and allow them to…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. A good tutor can raise interest of the student. Once the student feel interested in the subject, then he/she will be keen on learning new things. A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. Inside WaterlooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Elliott revised multiplication and division, then built confidence with fractions and long division using visual models.

For Year 8, Sophie worked on algebraic expansion and simplification alongside measurement skills, focusing on area and perimeter of different shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Adam tackled trigonometry topics including sine and cosine rules as well as curve sketching, helping to prepare for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 English, one student struggled with formatting sentences and showed a reluctance toward narrative writing; as the tutor noted, "needed help with formatting sentences."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 mathematics, untidy written work made solutions difficult to follow—messy handwriting directly led to lost marks when misread answers were submitted.

For a senior (Year 11) maths student, late submission of their formula sheet caused stress before an assessment: "Didn't give me cheat (Formula) sheet for the school in time."

These process habits interrupted feedback and sometimes meant unnecessary mistakes went unnoticed until revision.

Recent Achievements

One Waterloo tutor recently noticed a Year 7 student who used to rush through maths questions is now slowing down, carefully reading each problem and explaining his thinking out loud—a big shift from guessing in silence.

A Year 11 student who once struggled with probability is now consistently answering intersection problems and addition rule problems correctly, even tackling harder examples on his own.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who previously needed help for every division step managed to complete her long division worksheet independently and finished all practice test questions without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waterloo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School.
