The most important thing that I can do is to allow the student to learn with fun and without any stress. This can be done with a broad explanation on topics and giving examples from our day to day activities. Consequently, a student will able to catch up all the difficult theories easily. I have a good understanding about the math related subjects…

- Inspire a sense of purpose and ambition in students: It is a sense of purpose that gives the student passion and motivation to study well, hence defining their academic success. A purposeful, ambitious student is a student who is willing to go above and beyond, to think outside of the box in their educational journey. With a purpose, the student…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a positive and encouraging learning environment, tailor their teaching methods to the student's individual needs, and build the student's confidence in their abilities. I think to provide a larger framework or paradigm for what they are learning. When something fits into a context for "why" they are learning a concept. Mainly being able to listen to the student. I think I'm enthusiastic about getting to know them and what they care about, which helps me teach. Rather than just trying to do a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the subject material engaging, fun and captivating. In my opinion, a student can only learn and develop if they choose to do so, regardless of the ability or experience of the tutor or student. Thus, by making the subject in question seem alive through enthusiasm and engagement, the student…

A tutor must be willing to work with and adapt for each student. It is critical to not treat tutoring as one-size-fits-all - indeed many students may be getting a tutor because standard learning methods aren't working for them. It is also essential that tutors create a safe learning space where students are free to ask questions and give opinions.…

Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Since this is a 1-on-1 tutorial, the tutor must give full attention to the student. Also to find ways to make sessions enjoyable but not to the point of sacrificing the time for teaching. And again to be patient so that the student can fully understand the topics being discussed. My best quality as a tutor would be my patience. I know a lot of…

Inside WaterwaysTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ethan practised writing numbers in expanded form and solved digit combination challenge questions that required using each digit only once.

For Year 10, Sarah worked on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and was introduced to the discriminant, applying these concepts directly to her schoolwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James focused on finding equations of lines given a gradient and a point, then continued assigned work on linear relations using his Easter homework sheet.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently avoided writing out algebra steps, preferring to do calculations mentally—this made it hard to catch sign errors and led to confusion when checking answers ("he had the habit of trying to do all the steps in his head before answering").

In a Year 11 Physics session, equations from electromagnetism were only vaguely recalled unless prompted, as no organized summary or reference list was maintained.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student with creative story ideas found transferring thoughts onto paper challenging; great verbal detail vanished when faced with the blank page. Each instance meant time spent retracing rather than progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Waterways tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently requesting clarification on using the calculator's shift function for inverse trigonometry—he then completed angle problems independently.

In Year 8, a student who used to guess at comprehension answers began searching for "hints" within texts and solved worded maths questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4, once distracted during spelling activities, managed to write each target word three times as directed and sorted them into categories with much more focus than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspendale Gardens Primary School.
