I believe the most valuable thing I can give a student is confidence in the subject. In one instance, a Year 7 student avoided mathematics entirely due to a deep fear of not being ‘good enough.’ Through encouragement, patience and breaking concepts into manageable steps, I helped him overcome that fear and rebuild his confidence. For me,…

Making it feel like a friend teaching him/her, I remember of my high school days when my mates used to come to me to ask for a problem and I would solve it to them in such a way they would never forget, there were laughs included, stories included and of course the main knowledge. I like to research about what topics I’m tutoring and whatever it…

A tutor can help students get confidence in the subject and more importantly teach them how to enjoy the subjects . The tutor can make the lessons more interactive so that students don’t get bored . I believe the most important things a tutor can do are understand the student as an individual, build their confidence, and help them develop the skills to become an independent learner. A good tutor should not simply provide answers, but guide students to understand the reasoning behind them and encourage them to think critically and solve…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is making the student realise his/her potential. I very firmly agree with what Albert Einstein says , “ Most teachers waste their time by asking questions which are intended to discover what a pupil does not know. Whereas the true art of questioning has for its purpose to discover…

I believe every student has the potential to achieve their goals; sometimes, they simply need guidance, a listening ear, and clear explanations of challenging concepts. Above all, I believe patience is essential in helping students succeed. Not all students have the same learning abilities, attention span or language proficiencies - my biggest…

As a tutor it is essential to have a personal connection with each student in order to understand his/her strengths and weaknesses. A tutor should create a safe and encouraging learning environment, identify gaps in understanding, and help students build strong foundations rather than just memorising answers. Most importantly, a tutor should build a student’s confidence and independent learning skills so they can succeed both inside and outside tutoring sessions. My main…

The heart for teaching. Sometimes, students take a long time to understand concepts or complete work so it requires patience to guide and teach them along the…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Many times, the student finds themselves struggling as a result of miscommunication with their teachers at school. I think that really listening and observing the student's work ethics, as well as paying close attention to their problem areas can help both the tutor…

A tutor can ultimately change the perception a student has of a particular subject. If the tutor can truly explain things in a good manner, a student can change from hating the subject to finding it manageable and may even start enjoying the subject. However, the most important thing a tutor can do is provide a service that is catered to the…

To be there as a support structure, not just a tutor that's only available during the assigned time. I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

Inside Watsonia NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student focused on fraction addition and subtraction, using number lines to clarify concepts.

In Year 9, Alex worked through solving quadratic equations for x-intercepts and learned how to find the turning point of a parabola from its equation.

For Year 11, Sam tackled conditional probability as well as hypothesis testing, with recent lessons including discussion of real-world examples and practice interpreting statistical results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student repeatedly avoided showing full working—"kept trying to switch around numbers simultaneously"—which made it hard to spot sign errors and slowed progress with negatives.

For VCE Methods (Year 11), another student juggled multiple textbooks but "struggled to connect what he knows in a coherent manner," leading to confusion when tackling exam questions.

A Year 7 student hesitated to attempt problem-solving tasks, often saying "I don't know" rather than explaining her thinking. This reluctance led to missed opportunities for feedback and growing confidence gaps during class discussions.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia North tutor noticed Paul, a high school student, moving from needing step-by-step guidance with algebraic expressions to independently simplifying them and handling worded problems—a big shift from his earlier reliance on prompts.

Another win came when a Year 9 student, who used to avoid asking questions in class, began actively engaging during sessions and even asked for tougher trigonometry challenges after grasping the core concepts.

Meanwhile, Gracie in Year 5 showed new initiative by quickly working out percentages from fractions without hesitation—last month she'd pause at each question but now finishes her set with just minor corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia North Primary School.
