The primary role, I believe, for a teacher is to guide students to the right direction. With all the progress in information technology, educational content is readily available for literally anyone willing to learn something. The key role, for a modern-day teacher, I feel is to help students understand what they might be looking for and how they…

A skilled teacher may rekindle students' enthusiasm for learning by teaching in an engaging and practical manner. A tutor can lay a solid foundation for future courses by clearing the fundamentals of any subject. A good teacher can identify the student's weakest links and work with them to overcome them in a friendly manner. Teaching is a kind of…

In my opinion, the most important things a tutor should do for students are helping them overcome their own personal study barriers, instructing them to identify the appropriate study methods for their long-term effective study, and most importantly, guiding them to connect what they are learning with what they have already known to see every…

Building confidence in a students ability. Sometimes the only thing preventing students from excelling is doubt in their knowledge. Yes, nobody wants to ask 'silly' questions in the classroom when all your friends are there, but as a tutor it is important to not only help in understanding concepts in theory; but also instill adequate confidence in…

I believe, more than anything else, that a tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and trusting…

In my opinion, a tutor should be able to to discern what motivates a particular student, easily identify a student's weaknesses and quickly build confidence in these areas through targeted practice. A good tutor establishes specific goals and ensures any tools or methods necessary for improvement are clear and available for the student to use at…

As an educator the most important thing you can provide for a student are the tools and strategies that can help them to learn. The most important thing in my opinion is helping the student understand the problem, simply completing the problem for them helps no-one. If a tutor can do this, then the student should be able to complete any problem. Secondly, I think that it is important to treat the student as if they are an equal. Students who require tutoring generally…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to be available for a student at times of need, to clear their doubts, especially during exams, as that is generally the time when students have the most number of doubts. Students who don't have any uncleared doubts before an exam are generally more confident, and tend to perform better in exams.…

Inside Waurn PondsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Austin focused on fraction addition and subtraction as well as tackling challenging questions on number operations.

In Year 10, lessons with Georgia included reviewing biology topics such as gene technology and immunity while also preparing a SAC cheat sheet for English text response to *The Crucible*.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel worked through DNA replication, transcription, and translation in Biology using Edrolo resources and exam-style practice questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student repeatedly hesitated to begin essays, telling the tutor, "I just can't start my introduction," which led to delays even when ideas were clear.

In VCE Biology, difficulty came from "falling into traps laid out by examiners" on practice questions; not enough time was spent reviewing past mistakes before moving forward.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student would often blurt out guesses rather than write out working for multi-step maths problems, making it hard to pinpoint where understanding broke down. This resulted in lost confidence and more time spent untangling errors instead of progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Waurn Ponds tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 biology student who used to hesitate with mid-level exam questions—now she tackles logic-based and gene technology problems quickly, even when the content is brand new.

In Year 9 English, another student who previously struggled to start assignments has begun drafting full introductions and conclusions on his own and now confidently explains how each section supports his argument.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised himself by finishing his maths test much faster than expected, getting almost every question right after weeks of second-guessing his answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Highton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christian College Geelong - Senior School – Waurn Ponds.
