I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

Being patient and understanding. At the beginning of my tutoring journey, I provided several private one on one tutoring sessions. I started to expect a lot from the students as some students performed better than ours. But it is later I started understanding every student is different and we should always work at their pace. Never push them and…

I consider student engagement in a topic is one of the most important things a tutor can encourage in a student, and as someone beginning a Masters in physics I have plenty of enthusiasm myself for learning maths and science. I think that my enthusiasm will encourage students to to develop an enthusiasm of their own for what they are learning, as…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and understanding. Forcing an expectation can create insecurity, which can further decrease a students confidence, and hence academic ability. A friendly, positive attitude will create the most growth, and provide students with the strive to improve and upskill their academic abilities I think…

An important role of the tutor to do this is to assist the student to learn in a way they can understand. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, especially in subjects relating to the sciences or math, is to properly build the foundations of the subject. To make sure that their basic understanding of a subject is there before advancing to more difficult parts of a course. I believe by establishing these foundations, it makes…

Identifying the individual's strengths and weaknesses. The important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel more confident about their abilities and knowledge. The more they can back them-self, the more they can be composed in a test environment, the better they perform in test conditions, the better their marks. 1. Providing a figure of support - It's important that a student feels comfortable asking their tutor questions and knows that they will be taken seriously no matter how simple the question may seem. 2. Encouragement - It's easy for students to lose confidence when they can't understand something, and as a tutor it's important that you can help…

Local Reviews

Magali, West Leederville

Inside West LeedervilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as practising division with decimals.

Year 10 student Lewis worked through practical applications of quadratics, creating a page of summary notes to prepare for his exam.

For Year 12, Emily tackled calculus skills such as maximising and minimising functions using differentiation, along with kinematics problems involving motion graphs.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student often skipped drawing diagrams for trigonometry questions, which made it harder to spot angle domains and led to repeated errors.

During a Year 10 test, forgetting to keep track of units meant extra time was spent correcting conversions rather than moving forward with the main problems.

A senior (Year 12) learner "missed feedback from earlier attempts," as a tutor noted, resulting in the same algebraic sign mistakes showing up again when working through quadratic factorisation.

In each case, small process gaps snowballed—turning manageable tasks into lingering hurdles.

Recent Achievements

One West Leederville tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who had struggled to connect graphs and equations—now, he's confidently drawing linear and piecewise graphs from their equations and can also work backwards, deriving equations from the graphs.

A Year 9 student who used to mix up mean, median, mode, and range is now able to find each one correctly in different data sets without hesitation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 5 began asking for help when adding or subtracting negative numbers instead of guessing, especially after working through the ladder analogy together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like West Leederville Primary School.
