Ideally, although admittedly ironic, you want a student to be able to stand on their own two feet and achieve their goals without the need of a tutor at some point. So, although the direct role of a tutor is to teach content, the wider, arguably more profound role of a tutor is to teach lifelong skills, habits, and techniques that students can…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make difficult concepts feel easier and less overwhelming for a student. It's also really important to encourage them and remind them that they are capable of understanding the material, especially when they are feeling stuck or frustrated. I think a good tutor should create a comfortable…

To take the time to prepare a lesson suited for the student and take the time to get to know the student and identify his/her strengths in order to capitalize them, and identify his/her weaknesses so that we can work on them. Since I have been a teacher in these subjects, I know which topics most students struggle understanding; and because I am…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable, respected, and motivated…

A tutor should have the ability to share information in a way that others will learn, grasp the concepts, understand the input. A tutor should be able to know strengths and weakness of a student. A extra paper work is required by tutor for better performance of a student. A regular assessment of student to enhance his performance. A tutor should…

A good tutor should create a comfortable environment where the student should feel free to ask questions, identify gaps in their knowledge, and gradually making students capable of solving problems on their own. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create clarity, and inspire motivation. A good tutor doesn’t just explain answers — they guide students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills. By being patient, encouraging, and consistent, tutors help students feel supported and capable. I also…

Hard work combined with a clear direction and plan has led to amazing results for many of…

I believe forming a connection with the student and building a positive relationship with them that way they have a more positive look on being tutored. Most students dont enjoy the aspect of tutoring because it can be a chore for them, but by building a relationship during these sessions, you can make them look forward to being tutored more.…

Identifying the individual's strengths and weaknesses. Relating to my strengths as a tutor, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is giving a thorough and concise explanation of every single concept to a student, in a way that isn't only just memorizing, but also using their own logic and thought process to understand and learn on their own as they go. This must all be applied in an…

A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. Inside WilsonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sofia worked through perimeter and area of 2D shapes, along with converting metric lengths using practical measurement examples.

In Year 9, James tackled simultaneous equations and explored trigonometric functions, applying these to problem-solving tasks.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily focused on binomial expansion and quadratic equations, practising step-by-step algebraic techniques to build confidence for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed progress in algebra assignments but tended to rely on memory for formulas rather than using the provided formula sheet—"I have corrected him about it," the tutor noted, which previously led to avoidable mistakes.

In Year 11, one student's confidence remained low despite solid understanding; hesitation to attempt questions slowed test practice and sometimes caused second-guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with differentiating addition and subtraction symbols, often pausing mid-task for clarification.

Occasional distractions during tutorials, especially for Year 8s, meant extra time was spent regaining focus instead of moving forward with new content.

Recent Achievements

One Wilson tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had been hesitant to ask for help now starting sessions by bringing up questions from class, a shift from his earlier habit of staying quiet when stuck.

In Year 11, another student previously struggled with dividing ratios but, after some guided practice, was able to explain the process back and complete several problems independently.

A younger primary student who found adding and subtracting numbers confusing last term now volunteers to solve examples on her own during lessons and has begun completing similar homework tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wilson Primary School.
