Coming prepared to every session. The session is a time for the student to ask and have questions answered, not a time for the tutor to finally decide what should be done that lesson. This doesn't mean there's a rigid structure that doesn't change, but a combination of structure to follow, as well as being prepared for if the student is behind or…

Confidence is a key element that tutors can either instil or take away from a student. All children are born with a capacity to learn and it is our job to help them realise their great potential. In saying that, tutors must always be kind, encouraging and supportive of a child so that they can be confident enough to venture into the unknown and…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assist them in developing the relevant skills that they need to be successful and proficient in a subject, to the point in which they have enough confidence within their own abilities to approach the curriculum without feeling that they require extra assistance. The role of…

It is extremely important that a tutor is encouraging and can open their student up to the world of learning, enabling them to find a love of not just the subject, but of studying and bettering themselves. A tutor must show both compassion and enthusiasm, and always go out of their way to ensure each and every student leaves feeling satisfied and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is teach them to feel confident and enjoy the subject they are currently struggling in. By providing this to students, you can know that the student will continue to work hard to achieve their goals, and have a positive outlook on doing work they might not have enjoyed previously. As a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is talk to them. A tutor should directly ask the student what they are struggling with in class and what they need assistance with. The student should feel comfortable asking the tutor questions about schoolwork. This is important as a tutor provides a student with much more direct and focused…

A tutor should be able to lift the confidence of a student; with the ability to detect their strengths, as well as listing potential weaknesses so that there is a level of realism when analysing one's raw ability in a subject. I have the ability to break concepts into small parts to increase the level of understanding for a student. Paired with my…

It's important is to not show the student everything and complete their work for them. Tutoring is about enabling the student to complete work and content by explaining concepts to them so they understand what the question is asking them and explain to the child what the question is asking and then assisting them where they need to succeed. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are provide academic guidance, human connection, and consistency, and the combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. To help encourage them to try there best. Everyone wants 100% but they may not necessarily get it. A tutor can ultimately change the perception a student has of a particular subject. If the tutor can truly explain things in a good manner, a student can change from hating the subject to finding it manageable and may even start enjoying the subject. To learn the nature of the student's mind and how their brain processes information, so that a lesson plan can be tailored to their specific needs. There are many ways an individual can learn, and the most valuable thing a tutor can do is explain the information in a way that connects with the student's own learning capabilities. Inside YarrambatTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia worked on simplifying and adding surds, then applied multiplying surds to solve rectangle area problems.

Year 10 student Ben focused on linear equations, plotting points on the number plane, and finding rules for straight-line graphs using real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled exponential and logarithmic functions in Maths Methods, as well as practising derivatives and transformations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Physics, one student hesitated to attempt complex application questions unless prompted—"there was a lot of pushback when it came to learning a topic he appeared to struggle with during his test." This avoidance slowed progress, especially with transformations and visual problems.

In Year 8 Mathematics, another student relied heavily on calculators for multiplication and division; this meant that mental fluency lagged behind class expectations.

A Year 3 English learner showed agitation when asked to write full sentences, making written tasks feel overwhelming.

In each case, process challenges—not content gaps—limited independent practice and confidence in new situations.

Recent Achievements

One Yarrambat tutor noted that a Year 10 student who had struggled with surds now confidently simplifies them and even tackles rationalising denominators on her own.

In senior secondary, Sachin initially felt uncertain about complex calculus rules, but after targeted sessions, he independently solved chain, product, and quotient rule questions—showing real initiative by working through his question booklet without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student, previously hesitant to check his answers when mistakes happened, is now actively correcting himself during lessons and willingly attempts tougher algebra problems above his year level. Last session, he completed every question the tutor set for him.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarrambat Primary School.
