The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. Self-esteem can be extremely vulnerable during schooling years, and tutors have the power to enhance their students' level of self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy. When I believe in their potential, work with their strengths, support their…

I think above all else, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them and give them the necessary skills and understanding to be able to work independently, and to better understand the studying strategy that suits them best. It is important that a tutor is able to teach a student but more important than this is that a…

Having an incredible tutor can significantly impact the direction of a students academic and personal wellbeing, and therefore having a supportive and considerate tutor can enable a student to gain confidence in not only their academic studies but personally as they strive towards their own improvement under an encouraging hand. As a tutor, we can…

One of the most important things a tutor can offer is patience. Sometimes elements of a subject can be hard to understand and it is our duty as tutors to be patient and help them. We must provide examples and try explaining the problem in different ways — no two students are the same, so we must alter our approach to fit a student's needs. I…

Growth - It's not just about academic success, it's about the idea that, as a Tutor, it's your duty to make sure the students grow in their chosen subject. This involves understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses, their willingness to work hard and have fun, and enjoyment in the topic. Genuineness and Inspiration - A student can…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is listen to their student and understand a concern they have from their point of view. I also believe tutors should be encouraging and help their students gain confidence so they can complete tasks independently and successfully. Most tutors forget that students never enjoy tutoring, so it is important to set interesting challenges to keep students motivated and also polishing their skills using unorthodox methods. Too much of the time tutors just read off the textbook and don't provide alternative methods or keep the students' focus on their work. I believe the students…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

I believe a tutor must be able to motivate and enlighten the student, so the student will want to study for themselves, and not because of an external reason. My strengths include: Being able to both motivate others and enrich others in extending their knowledge. Shedding my own experience of the HSC and how it has affected me and so, enlighten…

Support and believe within the student that they can do it. They are only limited with what they think they think they can achieve, if a student sees their tutor believe they can do it than definitely they will drive their own development. The tutor must help the student improve in the subject they are teaching. This involves explaining things clearly so the student can understand and are thus enabled to tackle such questions and tasks on their own in the future. I also believe that the tutor must make the student feel comfortable around them. If it is possible to do without…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to simplify and engage with the content. Since students are already learning the material in school but struggling to grasp it, it is essential to use a different strategy. By making the content simpler and more engaging, the tutor can help the student to not only understand the material but to also apply it in…

Apart from supporting students’ academic performance, I think a tutor can be a constant presence in a child’s or youth’s life and thus, it is equally important that a tutor can support their students emotionally and mentally. I think a tutor can most importantly help a student with the concepts that they are struggling with in school and also helping students learn concepts that their school hasn't gone through yet so that once they do, it'll be revision for them rather than learning it for the first time. This particularly helped me when I was doing my HSC.…

I believe being able to relate and support your student is the most fundamental aspect of tutoring, as it allows you to effectively gauge where they are struggling and excelling. As not every student can be treated in the same manner, this understanding is quintessential in ensuring that one's student is enjoying tutoring and growing in knowledge…

Tutors are valuable to a student, and offer something unique. For one, meaningful relationships can be built and developed in tutoring, which in turn builds engagement. From my personal experience, learning comes more easily when the teacher strives to craft close relationships with students. From the tedium of the classroom, tutors can also…

Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

Inside Alfords PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex revised multiplication and division strategies, then practiced identifying and measuring angles.

For Year 8, Mia worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages using visual examples, while also revisiting earlier topics for a topic test.

In Year 10, Josh tackled advanced algebraic equations alongside trigonometry problems to prepare for his upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

Across Years 7–12, lesson notes repeatedly showed that revision habits need strengthening—particularly independent review between sessions.

For example, in Year 8 algebra, one student was reminded to "practice by himself to remember for tests," but had not attempted problems outside lessons, so key fraction simplifications were quickly forgotten.

In Year 10 trigonometry, another focused only on familiar SOH CAH TOA questions; "needs to go practice over things himself… and memorising SOH CAH TOA," a tutor noted, as exam-style variations remained unattempted. This led to hesitation when tackling anything beyond the standard drills during mock exams.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alfords Point noticed a big change with Max, a Year 10 student who had struggled with trigonometry and algebra—by the end of their session, he solved every question but also tackled extra problems on his own without prompting.

In another high school session, one student went from missing key exam questions to explaining exactly where mistakes happened and how to fix them, showing new self-awareness about learning.

For a younger primary student, a real shift came when she began answering questions out loud after usually waiting for hints; by the last exercise, she volunteered her answers first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alfords Point Public School.
