Teach them skills to master the subject. Teach them life lessons as well - eg resilience. Teach them different ways to look at things. Be a friend/listening ear when they need. Patient and caring. I believe that caring about my student's overall wellbeing is just as important as their grades. Resilience, not all methods of teaching will work…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and understanding. Forcing an expectation can create insecurity, which can further decrease a students confidence, and hence academic ability. The ability to explain concepts and solutions to problems in a way that the student can understand. What can look very simple to us can seem like a foreign language to our students, so the skill to break these down and make the student believe that what just looked impossible to them is actually very doable is invaluable as a tutor. If your student is not in their comfort zone while they are learning no matter how good your grades are a student you can't be a good teacher.i always put myself in the student's place first and then I act like the teacher. Because only then i can understand how shall my approach be.…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to break a concept down to its simplest form. In my school days, I often found this to be the easiest way to learn. If your basic foundation of any concept is strong, it gets much easier to build on that and learn more complex information pertaining to it. Moreover, being…

Being able to provide support. Inside AscotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on ratios and dividing with decimals, also practicing worded ratio problems from her textbook.

For Year 9, Lola worked through algebraic expressions and simultaneous equations, including strategies for adding and subtracting with negative numbers.

In Year 11, Ava tackled sketching parabolas by examining how coefficients affect their shape and applied these concepts using software to estimate real-life structures.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often completed algebra questions in cramped, unstructured layouts, leading to confusion and errors; as a tutor observed, "she sometimes tends to do her working out in a cramped space and loses her train of thoughts causing her to make mistakes."

In Year 12 Accounting, small calculation errors crept in when practice with income statements wasn't followed up by revisiting feedback or reviewing past work.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student hesitated to ask questions when unsure—leaving misunderstandings unaddressed until the next lesson and slowing progress on topics like negative numbers.

Recent Achievements

One Ascot tutor recently saw a Year 11 student move from a D to a B on their latest assessment, after weeks of showing less resistance and even adding their own input when solving questions—previously, they would avoid engaging at all.

In another session, a high schooler who used to hesitate now independently completed almost an entire maths assignment without asking for help, bringing in techniques remembered from earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by doing all her homework exactly as instructed and getting most answers right—a first for her this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayswater Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Belmont Primary School.
