I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to help them not only build the skills they need for the subject they're being tutored in, but also to build the skills to be confident of themselves within it as well. From my experience being tutored both in maths and for an instrument, that was something my tutors helped…

I think the most important thing that the tutor can do is to understand the student's mental and emotional state and to be flexible around it. The student will be more willing to learn if the tutor adjusts to them accordingly. I can make learning easier with a fun and light environment. I believe an english tutor must build a students understanding and confidence. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but making sure they actually understand the reasoning so that they can also succeed independently. I also believe that it is vital for a tutor to allow the student to not feel afraid to ask questions or make…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what an english tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer…

Inside BanksiaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sasha practised measurement skills by working through questions from Chapter 8 and also received support on specific homework problems.

In Year 10, James revised simultaneous equations using the elimination method and focused on understanding coefficients through step-by-step examples.

For Year 12, Charlotte completed practice questions on networks, rates, and ratios directly aligned with the Standard Mathematics syllabus to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling networks found it difficult to memorise key definitions and formulas, which slowed progress; as the tutor noted, "explaining the parts of the topic he didn't understand was hard without repeating myself."

In Year 7 algebra, another student consistently avoided writing out working for equations, making sign errors harder to catch.

For a primary creative writing task, one child hesitated to try new ideas out of fear of mistakes—leading to less original responses.

Meanwhile, in senior trigonometry revision, incomplete homework limited the depth of discussion and practice on advanced problems.

Recent Achievements

One Banksia tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with ratios in the past, began identifying calculation errors independently and even caught a mistake before the tutor did during a complex networks problem.

In another high school session, a student who used to skip showing working for algebra now writes out each step and talks through her process aloud without prompting, making it much easier to catch mistakes early.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student recently started asking for extra worksheets on mixed numerals—something she previously avoided—and now tries new fraction problems by herself before seeking help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe Public School.
