A tutor should be able to adapt their teaching style and tailor it for their students. The lessons should be interactive and engaging so the student is always focused on the class. Being able to understand what are the areas the students are confused with. As well as create a good way of communicating with the students so they feel comfortable to ask any and all questions. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show up and show care and interest in the student. Once that happens, you will be able to see what the student is capable of and what and how they can take from the subject. I am incredibly patient, thorough, empathetic, and I like to understand my students and cater to their style. Learning…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the subject material engaging, fun and captivating. In my opinion, a student can only learn and develop if they choose to do so, regardless of the ability or experience of the tutor or student. Thus, by making the subject in question seem alive through enthusiasm and engagement, the student…

I think the tutor has to be someone who is warm and friendly, and someone who the student sees as approachable yet still respects enough to take the lessons seriously. The student needs to feel confident in being able to ask the tutor any questions that they may be unsure about and so the dynamic needs to be one that is welcoming and accepting. I…

A tutor should connect with a student and approach problems in a way best for the student rather than what a tutor is more familiar with. With many problems, there are a variety of ways to go about it. The ability to adapt for the student to best understand it is important. Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. This is important because I have met many students who are under the assumption…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

Make it safe to get things wrong. A lot of students shut down the moment they feel behind, so the first job is making sure they're comfortable asking questions without feeling judged. I'm patient and I adjust to how someone actually learns rather than sticking to one explanation. In my previous experience, I was teaching adults from very different…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. Local Reviews

Gary has been a good personality fit with Myles. He has been gentle and encouraging and Myles is motivated to do more maths throughout the week where previously he was feeling it was all too hard.
Meredith, Beaumaris

Inside BeaumarisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack focused on solving linear equations for his assignment and revisited the use of indices in measurement questions.

In Year 9, Mia tackled advanced algebraic concepts, including challenging problems from Chapter 4 and some extension work into Chapter 5, with extra emphasis on transformation of domains and ranges.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah concentrated on rates of change and a basic introduction to limits and derivatives, also reviewing key trigonometry concepts through recent assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often left working untidy, making calculation steps hard to follow—"needs to lay out his steps on paper," a tutor noted, which sometimes hid mistakes in multi-digit multiplication.

In Year 10 English, another student avoided taking notes during "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and struggled later to recall themes and character roles for essay writing.

For VCE Maths Methods, incomplete revision was evident: "needs to do the non-tech practice test tomorrow," yet missed homework meant she faced the test less prepared and more anxious about calculator skills under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Beaumaris tutoring session saw a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with essay introductions begin structuring them independently, showing much clearer arguments and linking evidence more effectively in their English work.

A Year 11 maths student, who used to hesitate when facing new topics, came prepared with her own questions for the tutor and worked through challenging rate of change problems confidently, even writing out detailed working without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student started verbalising his thought process during problem-solving—something he hadn't done before—which helped him organise his calculations more neatly and spot mistakes on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumaris Primary School.
