A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. A tutor has to be available for a student and has to be a concrete source of education. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

The most important thing to a tutor can do is to give confidence to your students that they are well prepared for all kinds of problems (Mathematics Problems). I, as a tutor, always think as a student so that I can understand them and help them better. I believe I have a unique approach to teaching kids. My strong points would be my empathy, my…

I believe a tutor can uplift the confidence of a student by encouraging him/her every step of the way which will benefit the students in their future. I would say breaking down a complex matter into a simpler solution so that the concept is easier to grasp for the students. Making the lessons easier by using storytelling as examples when the…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for the student is to, engage with them to make the lessons fun yet still learning valuable content along the way. In this way, the student will look forward to the meetings every week instead of dreading them as some students do. My strengths as a tutor is that i have had 4 years of experience, in…

To provide moral support as well as valuable experience. Great study tips and tricks! Strengths - I am good at explaining things - usually in a few different ways too! I can sympathize with my students because I too have been through the joys of school and studies. I enjoy tutoring so I put in 100% of my effort and time. Weaknesses - I have OCD…

Be patient with them. Personalisation. In a classroom, the teacher's attention is divided and the material needs to be taught in ways that the majority understands. However, each student understands and learns differently so having it taylored to the individual (figuring out what they know, what they don't know and what they misunderstood) builds the foundation of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence while also making sure they don’t develop resentment toward the content. By adapting to their learning style and keeping things engaging, a tutor can help students see the value in what they’re learning. When students start to enjoy the subject, they’re…

Help them achieve their goals. It isn't about getting the highest marks, it's about improving and feeling good about going into tests and exams and feeling confident you know the material. Working with students can be a challenge, especially if we're meeting to help them bring up low grades. One thing I do when I meet the student for the very first time is to ask them questions about their interests, like sports, school subjects, music and movies. In the math problems that I create, I incorporate references to these interests. It…

Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. Margie, Bexley

Inside BexleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student William focused on index laws and scientific notation, then practiced probability questions using examples from Chapter 2.

A Year 11 student, Emily, worked through HSC exam paper problems covering normal distribution and financial mathematics, as well as finding roots of quadratic equations with applications in geometry.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Olivia strengthened her understanding of angle theory—especially with parallel lines and triangles—and reviewed plotting straight line graphs on the Cartesian plane.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often avoided writing full working in algebra and calculus, saying "I know the answer," but missing steps led to calculation slips—especially under exam pressure.

In Year 9, a lack of organisation with formulae meant that when solving geometry problems, the correct method was known but not set out clearly on paper.

For a Year 5 learner, motivation dropped after returning from a long holiday; homework was incomplete and key multiplication facts had to be re-taught during sessions.

These habits left students spending valuable lesson time retracing steps or relearning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Bexley tutor noticed Milo, a Year 12 student, had previously found financial maths and normal distribution formulas challenging but now solves related problems independently and accurately.

Benjamin, in high school as well, initially hesitated with square roots; after working through the concept step by step, he managed to solve equations and factorise expressions without needing prompts.

Meanwhile, Jessica in Year 5 used to struggle with fractions—she would guess answers instead of showing her process—but recently completed her homework almost error-free, checking her own work before asking for feedback.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bexley Public School.
