I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be encouraging and patient, to listen and understand their struggles, and to find ways to explain things that make sense to them. It's also important to show that you believe in them and their ability to learn, and to celebrate their progress along the way. I'm good at…

Help them to overcome their obstacles by helping them understand what they can't understand. Be a friend to them, not a teacher. Which helps most students to learn more efficiently as I believe. My communications skills are good. And my patience levels are very high so I can work with children very well as well. I also think that math and…

Helping each student be the best learner that they can be; independent learning is something that all successful students must be able to do. My philosophy is that if you want something, you can achieve it, as long as you dedicate the time and effort into it, and I will make sure that my students have this same mindset. I aim to make studying and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student having the ability to take pressure off the students. Having only graduated from school last year, going to tutoring for the subjects I had trouble in, took some of the pressures of Year 12 off of my shoulders as I had the reassurance that I could go to my tutors with concepts I had trouble…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable, respected, and motivated…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student to is support the student to the best of their abilities and to also believe in the student. Supporting the student to the best of their abilities means that the student will have more assistance for their tutors to achieve their goals. And we as tutors must believe in the abilities…

The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

Support - that's what we're here for. Primarily for academic support, assisting them in understanding and boosting their learning in difficult situations, but it's more than that. Having someone you can speak freely with, and rely on, in those vulnerable situations is important for any student. Good tutors provide a sense of security and…

Doing everything possible to get the true picture of the subject matter to the understanding of the student. Throughout my education, I liked those teachers who would inspire me to solve the problem by myself rather than giving the information directly. For me, the most important thing is the ability to solve a problem using the right methods. To tutor is to guide them to the right direction and help students avoid the common mistakes. I have excellent…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient and adapt to their learning style. Not everyone learns the same way, with the same words or at the same time. Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

To give the student confidence and show them that the subject is not beyond their understandings. Prove that It's not difficult but needs to be approached correctly. Almost all students have more than enough talent to do their study, the most import thing in tutoring is to help them to uncover that (sometimes) hidden talent. In addition to my…

Inside BooragoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Lillie worked through patterns and algebra, plus location and transformations using tailored questions to target areas needing improvement.

For Year 8 Matteo, the session focused on linear lines and solving simultaneous equations, including test-style problems for practice.

Year 10 Olivia reviewed past measurement tests—covering perimeter, area, surface area, and volume—and then revised probability concepts such as Venn diagrams and two-way tables to strengthen understanding before her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits need attention across year levels.

A Year 8 student repeatedly ran out of time in tests, with the tutor noting, "a lot of questions that weren't answered were due to running out of time."

For a Year 10 learner, messy or incomplete working—especially skipping steps in algebra—meant errors went unnoticed until review.

In one senior session, failure to bring required textbooks and materials led to lost learning opportunities; as observed: "needs to bring textbook to tutoring sessions."

Meanwhile, a primary student's homework was not completed before the lesson, resulting in half the session being spent catching up instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Booragoon tutor recently saw a Year 11 student take real initiative by starting a daily journal to track tricky economics topics, something he hadn't done before, which helped him recall key concepts for his final exam.

A high schooler who used to hesitate when stuck on maths questions now openly talks through her problem-solving steps and cross-checks answers aloud, rather than staying silent or guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often rushed her homework has begun completing all assigned work independently and on time—last week she handed in every task without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Booragoon Primary School.
