I think the most important things a tutor can do are make learning clear and build a student’s confidence. A tutor should help students become more independent in their learning and also be there whenever they require us. My strengths as a tutor are patience, adaptability, and clear communication. I can break down complex ideas into simple steps…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

According to me the basic responsibility for a tutor is to nurture the student's natural strength and elicit more learning and development than a classroom teacher and also understand their strength, weaknesses and interests that would help them academically successful. My teaching methods according to different students ,patience and appropriate…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence and adapt lessons to their learning style. For example, I often use practical examples such as real-life applications of forces and motion (e.g. seat belts in car) in Physics to help students better understand difficult concepts rather than relying only on…

I believe the most important things a tutor can provide are guidance, confidence, and motivation. In my experience, students achieve their best when they have tutors who not only explain content clearly but also address their struggles and guide them with patience and care through challenges. I have noticed that when students lack confidence or…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel heard and valued. Giving them full attention and creating a space where they feel comfortable enough to ask questions and even make mistakes allows real learning to happen. I focus on building a personal connection so they trust the process, while also guiding them to reflect,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is empower them in their learning. It's important to help the student develop not only their skills but also their attitude towards learning because that is more often the first step in improvement and growth. I should be able to make learning fun for the student and make the student feel more confident while dealing with the subject. The student might slowly develop liking for the subject if they find it easy and interesting. The most important task that should be done is that the concept is clear for the student such that they don't ever feel the…

After the first months of tutoring passed by I noticed that what most students necessitate was a method, a fixed pattern to follow whilst studying. Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. As the result of five years of University study, I have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is relate to them. Everyone is different and learns in a different way. Hence, you must adjust your method of teaching for each individual student. Some people are auditory, visual or written learners, some like algebra, calculus, or trigonometry. Moreover, if you are understanding of your…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. Build a relationship with the student. If you can make the sessions enjoyable then the student will be more likely to engage and try to improve. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do is guide and support a student in their knowledge. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and self trust, as this often leads to improved performance. I also give students breaks when…

Inside BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Archie revised area and perimeter of different shapes for a zoo project, using practical examples.

In Year 10, Reagan focused on polynomial operations—specifically division—and discussed approaches to Physics questions around atoms and radiation.

For Year 12, Jack worked through exponentials and logarithms by debriefing a quiz, then tackled exam-style applications involving log laws to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Methods student was "reluctant to rely on algebra to solve problems as he can do 99% of stuff in his head," which led to missed steps and made error tracing difficult—especially in polynomial division.

In Physics (Year 12), a student didn't complete set homework on worked examples for constant acceleration, meaning less time could be spent consolidating challenging concepts during the session.

For a Year 6 student, online lessons meant the tutor "couldn't see his working out"—making it hard to spot process gaps when tackling algebra. The result: real-time feedback was limited, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brighton noticed one Year 10 student who had always hesitated to ask for help during sessions now openly stopped and checked his understanding when working through challenging synthetic division questions, instead of guessing as before.

In a senior physics session, another student made a breakthrough with Hubble's law after struggling previously—she explained the connection herself between mass-energy equivalence and EMR entirely in her own words.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to mix up fraction subtraction was able to solve all problems independently involving subtracting fractions from whole numbers without prompts and even checked his answers independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Grammar School.
