I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different learning styles,…

Personally, I believe in three things a good tutor can do for a student. First, Can Encourage every child understanding their speciality and treating them differently. The prevailing inherited difference in them is a mean to stimulus the school going students and that can be done by the tutor. Second, Can Motivate on every walk to the student…

In my opinion, tutor must be patient and understanding towards a student. This allows the student to feel more comfortable with the tutor, which allows them to easily tell the tutor any troubles that they're having with their studies. A tutor should also have empathy and be a good listener for the student. Moreover, the tutor should also be…

The tutor should be logical, able to clear all the doubts and be proactive. In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to break a concept down to its simplest form. In my school days, I often found this to be the easiest way to learn. If your basic foundation of any concept is strong, it gets much easier to build on that and learn more complex information pertaining to it. Moreover, being…

A tutor should create a supportive and non-judgmental environment, encourage curiosity, and help students develop independent learning skills. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to celebrate even the smallest of wins. No matter how slow or hard progress is, it is still progress! I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

Inside CarlisleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised multiplying and dividing mixed fractions, along with converting between decimals, percentages, and fractions.

In Year 8, Mia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and worked through simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas reviewed trigonometry by solving for unknown angles in right-angled triangles and revised the use of Pythagoras' theorem with practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student found it challenging to identify unknowns during assessment prep, needing extra time to memorise her plan—she will also be memorising her plan for her assessment, noted the tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's incomplete notes on biology cycles meant confusion when revising key processes.

In Year 3 maths, messy working and reliance on blocks slowed progress in subtraction; skipping pen-and-paper practice made online lessons less effective for another student.

For a senior accounting task, overuse of the calculator hid gaps in understanding worded finance questions, leaving some answers unexplained during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carlisle tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on trigonometry now confidently chooses the right rule for finding unknown angles, needing far less prompting than before.

In Year 12 Chemistry, a student who was previously unsure about planning investigations can now lay out steps to identify unknowns and solve simple problems mostly unaided.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often guessed answers has started asking for help when needed—last session, she explained her thinking during a fractions task instead of staying quiet or rushing through mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlisle Primary School.
