I think an english tutor, or any teacher, can honestly make or break a subject. As a tutor, I want to be able to make a student fall in love with what they are teaching them, rather than them seeing going to tutoring as a chore. I find my biggest strength to be that I get along well with younger kids and other people in general. I am very patient,…

Personally, I believe that in order to be a good tutor it is necessary to provide a level of support that feels as if it extends beyond the obligation that the position you hold is your job. I believe it is crucial to possess a genuine understanding for the strengths and flaws of your students in order to properly and efficiently deliver supoort…

A tutor can provide deeper and specific pedagogical learning support for students to hope them reach their learning goals. A student might not get enough one-on-one time with a classroom teacher in a regular classroom setting. Tutors can complement the traditional school setting by providing assistance, clarification, deeper scaffolding and…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence that they have the ability to learn. Tutors shouldn't be doing the work for the student but rather giving them the tools required to continue to grow and become active learners even after the tutoring session has ended. I am very patient, kind and…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is give them confidence. As a tutor you are teaching your student how to solve problems, but more importantly allow them to develop their own methods for solving these problems by themselves. I think my best strengths as a tutor are that I am extremely patient and compassionate…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to be a source of inspiration and support. I believe all students are equally capable and that with a little bit of tutor motivation and support, they can grow. I would consider my biggest strength to be my patience. Listen. I think it is pivotal for an english tutor to be able to listen to the student. Be it regarding concepts or content, or just a tutors teaching style. Listening and responding to feedback is essential. Determination. When teaching a student something for the first time, it can be very difficult for them to understand a concept. So, as a…

1. Help them towards their study milestones so they have an unhindered path towards any given career of choice. 3. Understand something rather than memorising it. I hold this statement in significance. Having studied in different countries I understand the difference in teaching. Tutoring being 1 on 1 or in small groups allows for this. I…

Tutors should be willing to listen and work well with students to achieve their personal goals. Tutors must foster or inspire a strong work ethic within students, motivating them to strive to reach their personal best. Aside from increasing a student's comprehension of particular subjects, tutors should highlight the importance of speaking up and…

One of the most important skills I believe an english tutor can develop is the art of explaining material in different ways. Often, when students struggle to understand some concept, explaining the material in the same way repeatedly does not help. The key then is to try approaching the material in different ways until the student can grasp it.…

Prior to anything a tutor must undertand the student's goals and objectives. It is only after this that the tutor should then understand what kind of person the student is, motivational factors behind the interest in learning, and how to communicate more effectively when transfering knowledge. The student's personality is also a key factor to…

Inside ClarevilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Max worked on converting fractions to decimals and tackled multi-digit multiplication, using step-by-step written algorithms.

For Year 8, Sarah focused on surface area and volume calculations for cylinders, pyramids, and cones, applying formulas to solve real-world problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ethan reviewed trigonometry involving angles of elevation and depression by drawing diagrams and working through practice questions together.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's written solutions in algebra and consumer arithmetic were sometimes unclear, making it harder to spot errors like missing units—she needs to be more careful in writing the correct units for consumer arithmetic problems.

In Year 11, formula recall slowed down progress with bearings and financial maths questions; not having key relationships on hand meant extra time searching or guessing.

A Year 4 learner hesitated with mental subtraction, relying on fingers rather than building number sense, especially when crossing tens. This led to delays and frustration during timed drills.

Recent Achievements

A Clareville tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who'd previously mixed up logarithm rules score 88% on her exam, only slipping on minor log law errors she now recognizes herself.

In a Year 9 session, a student who used to guess at which formula to use now sketches out diagrams and confidently selects the right equation before starting calculations.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has moved away from counting on fingers for addition—he's begun using 'rainbow' number bonds instead, especially with larger sums—and even volunteered to add by twenties without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Avalon Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bilgola Plateau Public School.
