I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to show patience, love, care, and genuine understanding. Every student learns at their own pace, so I make it a priority to explain concepts as many times as needed in different ways until they feel confident. Creating a supportive and encouraging environment helps students not…

You can inspire a student and make him independent. The goal of a teacher (ironically) is to make himself redundant. Being able to develop self-learning skills and teaching oneself by asking right questions is the key process of learning. Eventually, you can master the art of learning itself and you don't need a teacher. I can be very friendly and…

A tutor should inspire and motivate students to do maths and increase their interest in this subject. Also, tutor should make their students at ease so that they are more comfortable asking questions and clarifying their doubts. Also tutors should ensure that their students understand concepts fully. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build trust, show patience, and create a supportive learning environment. When a student feels safe, understood, and not rushed, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and grow in confidence. Patience allows students to learn at their own pace, and trust ensures they…

I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

It is very important that a tutor understands the strengths and weakness of a student and approach them accordingly. A personalised approach would be the best method to adopt and it is important to help the students become independent learners. Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

Tutors must build the confidence of their students - they can't just teach them the content and expect them to be able to do it on their own - its more than that. A good tutor needs to build the childs confidence so they know they can answer a question. I can do this, I am the type of tutor that wants to support students to do their best and to…

A tutor needs to be able to have the appropriate expectation on what each unique student is able to accomplish and thus make adjustments appropriately. As every single student has different learning capabilities and speed, affected by a multitude of factors (i.e. age, environment, genetics, interests, etc.), a tutor would need to be able to make…

To be there for them; sometimes, especially for younger students, high school can feel overwhelming with procrastination becoming predominant as the years go on; I would hope that I can always make time to assist them last second and never be one of the impermanent tutors. The most important thing by far is engagement. Tutoring is good, although it can only do so much if the students interest is elsewhere. The best thing a tutor can do is help the student engage more in school as the student will spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% with a tutor so using that 80% to your advantage is the most important…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s self-confidence. Often, the biggest barrier to learning is the fear of being 'bad' at a subject. A great tutor removes that fear by creating a structured environment where the student feels in control of their progress. Active listening to identify exactly where the gaps in…

Inside Dean ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised subtracting four-digit numbers and reviewed strategies for tackling five-digit numbers.

In Year 8, Josh worked on algebra skills by solving equations involving fractions and identifying the point of intersection between lines.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah focused on advanced trigonometry, applying the sine rule to find unknown angles and using the cosine rule to calculate triangle side lengths in non-right-angled scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often rushed through multi-step problems in fractions, leading to missed working and confusion when reviewing errors—one tutor noted, "his homework was quite challenging to read," as cramped layout made mistakes hard to spot.

In Year 10 algebra, a student hesitated to write out steps due to uncertainty, so sign errors slipped past unnoticed.

Another (Year 7) struggled to keep work organized; forgotten or misplaced homework meant time was lost searching for notes instead of practicing new material.

When a Year 11 attempted trigonometry questions, skipping calculator checks led to repeated angle mix-ups and incomplete answers.

Recent Achievements

One Dean Park tutor noticed a real shift with Nick, a high school student who previously needed frequent help on algebraic fractions—he simplified complex expressions and solved equations almost independently. James, another high schooler, had been hesitant about simultaneous equations but now confidently eliminates variables and substitutes to find solutions on his own.

Meanwhile, Aaron in primary has started tackling division algorithms without reminders; he now volunteers strategies for practical word problems and checks his answers before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like William Dean Public School.
